I didn’t complain much when the US started slowly converting to the metric system...ok except for that time I found out every nut and bolt on my Chevy truck was metric. But gosh dang who didn’t?
Anyway, digression over, it looks like Federal has now changed to PMS. Yes sir, the Penile Measurement System.
Now, I’m not sure when this change took effect but they have definitely change, for whatever reason. I bought some shot shells for my snake charmer cause they were under 10 bucks a box of 25 and I really didn’t look til I got home but...well, a picture is worth a thousand words. Y’all figure it out. I gotta go back to Walmart and see if I can find a dick ruler now.

You measured the unfired shell at 2 1/2". But the shell length designation is based on a fired shell length, which should fill the chamber length, or nearly so. 76 mm is about 3".

Give metric a chance. Having grown up in a country that standardized on metric decades ago, I can tell you that the system makes much more sense than imperial.

(that said, if you want to read about the headaches of converting from imperial to metric, go Google the "Gimli glider".)

I believe he is correct. It’s the length before loaded and crimped or after it’s been fired

yes, I realize that. I noticed that as a teen when the old man started me out on the carousel loader pumping out 12ga shells. But these are just noticeably shorter than any 3” shell I’ve ever seen. No way a .410 needs a half inch of hull to crimp. Maybe another pic with the same stamp on a different cartridge..

Maybe it’s the “tactical” squirrel load. I hear James Yeager recommends them.

According to the 5th edition Lymans shotshell handbook the dim for a 3" 410 fired is 3.010-.100"
    with folded crimp 2.840"
    with rolled crimp 2.900"

    2 1/2" fired is 2.530"
    with folded crimp 2.360"
    with rolled crimp 2.400"

    Uh....no.

The system of measurement that I described is indeed the industry standard. I agree that a 2 1/2" long crimped shell will likely be shorter than 3" when fired. If Federal marks it 3" (76 mm) and it is not, then they should be called to answer for it.

I thought I was crazy for having old books like that
