Daniel Justin Mahan (age 42), a resident of Ponchatoula, pleaded guilty to federal charges. You can read the entire article but the HUGE thing that jumps out at me are his possible fines.
$10,000,000 fine for the child porn conviction (had images depicting the sexual victimization of prepubescent children on his laptop), and up to $250,000 for the weapons violation. Mahan was a previously convicted bank robber but had 24 firearms and 26,000 rounds of ammo in his possession at time of arrest. Mahan will be spending the next 10-20 years in a federal prison.

I have some choice adjectives for this perv, but will leave out my personal opinions of his character here.

Chances are high this guy is/was a member here. Clearly he is/was a firearms enthusiast, even when the law prohibited it for him personally.

24 firearms? -- hardly excessive. But I agree the guy should be locked up for a very long time. The ammo is a bit much but my motto is "you can never have enough ammo,....unless you are tying to swim".....

I don't see anything wrong with being a retired bank robber?

The rest of the child porno charges they can hang him by his Nutzzzs, I don't care.

As far as him being a member here, So what, Plenty of scum bags have come and gone on BS.

exactly. I guess that's why we stress to use our best personal judgement when using the classifieds section.

I'll go one step beyond that. Some of us here (me included) have unknowingly sold firearms to felons via the classifieds. The easy work around = newspaper ads, LA Sportsman, and other on line and print classifieds. Person to person sales.

26k rounds... I'm just jealous. The sad thing is that that will probably be 'destroyed' as evidence. Hopefully the department uses it and doesn't just dump it.

yeah, I'm pretty sure we've all made that mistake at least once. Live and learn I guess.... That's one of the reasons, I try to stick with this forum as far as browsing/buying/selling from classifieds. I like to think chances are at least somewhat minimized, considering a large majority of the "active" members here, are LEO or otherwise generally upstanding people.

I completely agree with this. This forum makes me feel much more comfortable and safe meeting someone that I can see has met multiple other members here and none of them caught a weird vibe.

If ya count Rim Fire like 22Lr and 22WMR I have! Let's just say the count is way up there. You may have more ammo than you think

If he did his time for the bank robbery and was released then he was deemed good enough to be out in public. If i dont trust someone with a gun, i dont trust them period.

Child porn on the other hand is past the line i drew in the sand a long time ago. They should make him eat the ammo, all of it.

▲this. And then light him on fire... I have very few zero tolerance lines, but pre-pubescent child porn crosses most of them.

So what exactly are you saying above? That even tho he was a convicted felon and out of prison, you're fine with him owning firearms?

To the typical “non-shooter” or non-outdoor person, 26,000 rounds seems huge. Given 24 firearms, it’s a little more than 1,000 rounds average each. Most people that I shoot with or “talk shop” all agree that a good goal is to accumulate 1,000 rounds. That allows for frequent practice without risking a serious depletion of stock.

In recent times we have seen ammo shortages, even in such non-exotic categories as .22LR. Most non-shooters don’t know this. They also have no clue about being prepared against unthinkable circumstances.

After Katrina, some areas got really scary, with lawlessness and mayhem that brought out the worst in some of our citizens. So it’s not exactly whacko to keep prepared and secure.

If you had to defend your home from looters, how much ammunition is enough?

As for the criminal aspects of the suspect being discussed, I would like to suggest that we all take notice. In this age of technology we have been able to be electronically linked with people we don’t really know and have never seen. Therefore we have not been able to really benefit from the cues we would normally observe in an “in-person” encounter. We may be inadvertently interfacing with felons, deviants, terrorists and spies for all we know.

I don’t think that I want to conduct a “handshake” firearms transaction with someone who I don’t REALLY know. Therefore, I’m going to do transfers only through an FFL. Most of the simple transactions I’ve had were $25-$35. If that’s a deal breaker for someone, so be it. I do understand the down side of the transaction being “recorded,” but at least half of what I own was bought in a registered transaction anyway.

I’d feel really bad if I sold something to a molester, something that was used in a crime or bought something that was stolen. I’m not naive enough to believe that an FFL transaction removes all the downside, but it is a start.

In the meantime, we all need to be cautious, skeptical and thorough.

When the CMP was selling the 22lr surplus at 90 bucks for 5000rnd cases! How may you have taken? I ordered Some and still have 20K left.

Only a madman would have 20K of ammo right?
At one point the 22lr count was 45,000 plus when ya added it all up.

It sort of shocks me when you hear the news media describe the guns and ammo that a person has when they are arrested. They will describe it as a fortress of guns and ammo and they confiscated 12 hand guns and 2,000 rounds of ammo. They will go on saying how dangerous this person is with his magnitude of weapons.

I bet there are a few people on here who laugh when this happens.
