    I have a Daniel defense M4-V7 I think.
Anyway it has the short lived hand guard that Danial Defense came out with a little prior to the keymods becoming so popular. I’m looking for suggestions for a up grade to this system.
My rifle is mid length and I would like to the the hand guard sub 200.

Sounds like you are in ALG defense territory price wise. Many options to choose from between 100-200 bucks.

Wouldn’t be surprised if you can find a seekins precision hand guard in that price range also.

I would try for a used samson or troy. That will be the best deal for the money on a brand name rail.

If you want keymod, they are basically 2 interface methods I know of (3 if you count the outdated yhm thread on crap, and I don't count that one).

    1. A noveske NSR barrel nut with 3 sets of 2 screws that are located at 3,6,and 9 oclock on the barrel nut. The nut does have to be indexed, and can be a bit of a pain. But the rail is held on well. I have purchased quite a selection of the chinese clones of the NSR and have been happy with all of them. You can get steel or aluminum barrel nuts, and vSeven make a titanium nut ($$$$)

    2. I am not sure of the originator, but basically you have a round barrel nut, and the rail slides over it and clamps in place with multiple screws located at the bottom of the rail. This setup is just a friction fit, and normally has anti rotation tabs that interface with the upper receiver. I have seen a few type (diamondhead sticks out in my mind) that have the bolts pass thru channels in the nut, effectively preventing the rail sliding forwards if the bolts get loose. The round barrel nut does not need to be indexed, which is great, just torque it down and put the gas system on. If I was buying a more expensive brand name rail I would want this style of barrel nut.

I generally find rails to be very overpriced. If you plan to hang all kinds of stuff on them I guess the expensive ones make sense. I usually run a light and maybe an mbs. My forward sling mount is near the barrel nut and I doun;t end up putting a bunch of load on the tube near the muzzle. Every free float rail I have ever seen will flex if pushed on. Not really an issue as they are free floated.

Alg has some decent looking stuff on clearance, no way would I pay 170 bucks full price for that stuff though.

Delta Team Tactical have a selection of very well priced handguards. The davidson defense black diamond is nice, I had a pistol with a 7" version and the fit and finish was very good. That uses a non indexed barrel nut, so easy to install.
