I was told it was probably caused by the 2011 with a trigger that was very, very light.

Slide was forward, finger was off the trigger. Gun went off when he slammed the mag home.

Short answer from someone else who knows 1911/2011 pistols:
Round pointed up hits disconnector, grip safety depressed or pinned. Disconnector tripped sear causing pistol to fire.
Improperly fitted disconnector sticking into magwell and a 2# trigger.

Just rewatched it in full screen slow mo. Slide was forward. Makes more sense now what JB said.

Wouldn’t that be a ND due to the equipment setup and failure?

I agree. Gun with a 2 pound trigger (it was probably even lighter than that) will speak up when bumped. The pistol is pointed upwards, gravity and inertia working together. Try setting a ready to shoot target rifle with a 2lb trigger butt down on the floor without touching off a round. Better keep your face clear and get out the putty to fill the hole in the ceiling.
As far as the loose bullet contacting gun parts inside the magwell on a closed slide... I think the gun stood a better chance of discharging from the errant bullet striking the primer of the round in the tube and causing the discharge...which didn’t happen either but could be easier to disprove upon inspecting the primer of the empty.
Also, race guns being what they are, that trigger and disconnect, riding on the very edge of the sear can be like a half tripped mousetrap. Step on the floor beside it and pow. It’s very possible that if you’d used a trigger pull gauge at that very moment on the guy’s gun that you’d have gotten a result less than intended for the gun.
Lastly, if by some extreme measure of chance the gun is set up to allow access to any of the fire control parts via the magwell the shooter needs to start over.
