Going through stuff in the attic I rediscovered that I have whatis apparently a WW2 German k98 bayonet for a German Mauser K98 rifle I believe an uncle or other relative brought home.

It has some rust on it and I'm not sure of how to clean it up without ruining the rest of the finish. Any thoughts?

I would recommend that you rub some mineral oil (or any light oil) with a soft cloth to clean and oil it. You can lightly scrub the rust with a 100% copper Chore Boy scrubber. Do not use steel wool.

The Chore Boy Copper Scouring pads can be found on Amazon. They are hard to find in grocery stores. They have Copper covered pads, but do not use these.

    Nice find.

I would not use copper to scrub if you don't want to take the finish off.

An older gent told me that oil and a stainless steel steel wool works the best.

I think I would try whatever method on something else before scrubbing the bayonet.
