The police of the state of Saxony-Anhalt introduces the pistol Glock 46 as a new service pistol. It replaces the SIG Sauer P6 still in service. As the Ministry of the Interior of the state announced today, the Austrian manufacturer was awarded the contract to equip the nearly 6,400 police officers in the course of a procurement procedure.
The conversion to the new service pistol model should be completed by the end of 2021. U. a. The police supporters of the Polytechnic Police will be the first to be equipped with the new weapon. The special units are excluded from the new purchases, since their weapons equipment is at a modern level. In addition to the purchase of around 8,600 new service pistols / accessories, including reserve and training weapons and models for training and education, there are a number of other project costs, such as the necessary conversion of the police's own weapons workshop. The total cost is about 8.6 million euros.
The model 46 is designed for the caliber 9 x 19 mm, but deviates significantly in terms of their construction from the usual Glock standards. The Glock 46 has a new turn-lock system. This design makes it possible for the weapon to disassemble without pulling the trigger - a central requirement of the Technical Guideline "Pistol". Saxony-Anhalt is the first country in Germany to introduce a weapon of the Austrian manufacturer as standard weapon. By contrast, Glock has been using various versions of models 17, 19 and 26 for police special units of the German federal and state governments and also for the Bundeswehr for many years.
The renovation of the service pistols in Saxony-Anhalt was necessary not only because of the outdated technology and the resulting increased maintenance requirements. Further developments in the industry as well as the abstract terrorist threat situation necessitated an adaptation to the current situation and thus a change of armament. Almost 100 experts from the Ministry of the Interior and the subordinate business unit of the state police were involved in the test procedure.
The Glock 46 can be customized in numerous details to the respective user. Special emphasis was placed in the selection decision on a high magazine capacity, the lowest possible weight, a simple and safe operation and a flexibly adaptable to the size of the hand of each police officer grip.
Interior Minister Holger Stahlknecht: "I am pleased that we continue the equipment offensive of the state police. With the new service pistol, the police officers and police receive a state-of-the-art instrument for the prevention of dangers, which they can and must rely on in an emergency. After the upcoming training and education, I trust in a professional approach to the new weapon. "
