Always use an off the shelf factory round for a defense weapon. If you reload, the dead guys lawyer will use that to show you were trying to kill instead of stopping a threat. And a 38 special hollow base wad cutter loaded backwards is a good load.

Y'all laugh but my dad and I were at a gun show in the early 90's. We were looking for hollow point for .32 s&w long. My dad picked up a bag off the table but about dropped them when he saw the price. It was like a dollar a round back then. Then we realized there was a primer glued into the hole.... I don't think we ever did find hp rounds for that little gun... :)

I'm not picky about brand when it comes to self defense ammo. Any major brand is fine. I do shoot at least a box through to make sure they feed ok before carrying though.

Yep your right and a lot of people and deer have been killed with 22 rf also but it is definitely not my choice of caliber for either chore .
Butchers used to put livestock down with a shot to the head with a .22 and it worked very well.

I listed what I consider the best choices in post #3 and do not advocate carrying a .22 or any mouse pistol.
