I have quite a few AR. 20", 16", 10.5", and in between in 5.56. 14.5" pinned and welded in 308. 9.5" in 300 blk. 4" in 9mm. And I have a lonely SBA3 brace that needs a pistol built around it. I'm probably looking at something in the "not completely practical" category but not quite as far out there as a 2" barrel (see picture). I've considered a 7.5" in 5.56 or a 12.5" in 308. And I'm trying to avoid any niche calibers. If it's going to be a range gun, I'd prefer not to build something that'll cost me $1.50 every time I pull the trigger. Expensive ammo takes the fun out of a fun gun. Does anyone have any interesting ideas?

I forgot about the 22lr with the 4" barrel. But it doesn't have a binary trigger and it has a plug instead of a buffer tube.

Your welcome to try my 10.5" AR-10 it is quickly becoming my favorite range toy lol. I almost forget I have a 20" AR10 as well...

The biggest issue pushing me toward an AR15 over an AR10 is the 308 tax. Just about everything on an AR10 costs a good bit more than the AR15 equivalent. I think some of it is supply and demand. In some cases, like the BCG, it's a lot bigger part on the AR10. But the receivers, for example, there's not a $#!t ton more material in the AR10 receivers than in the AR15 receivers. But the cost difference seems to be a lot.

If it's a range toy you can get a Tennessee arms Polymer lower. Stripped run about $50 shipped and use a standard AR15 LPK just a few bucks for the bigger take down pins

I don't have a good articulable reason but I've never been a fan of polymer lowers.
Cheap enough to try plus a lifetime warranty that I had to use for an oversized mag well... Service was quick less than a week from mailing to being on my doorstep

Had a poly lower go auto before because of breakable plastic parts, just say no.

Maybe try a 25/45.It has so much more knockdown power than the 5.56.
The idiots at firearm blog put it down, but they never really tested it,they just
say they did and hammered off some ballistics that have no bearing on the
difference.A 5.56 can ping a metal target,a 25/45 round shot from the exact
same distance knocks the same steel down.Look on youtube, proven fact.

Most have been the ones that used plastic FCGs... Never an issue with mine.

Build an AK pistol. Meets every criteria you set out. I used to be skeptical until I slapped an ALG trigger in one. Much more fun to build. As satisfying or more to plow thru ammo at the range. Cool factor...subjective...but when you see a bitchin AK you know something is up.

Get a Draco, yugo, or Polish WBP pistol to start with if you don’t want to go whole hog building.

I may one day but not with this build. I was something short and I think a shorter barrel for a round who's advantage over a 308 is distance would be a waste. I remembered I have a Spikes Snowflake stripped lower sitting in my safe. I may have to check my parts bin to see what I have laying around.

6.5 grendel pistol??? You could shoot the cheap wolf steel at the range and save the good ammo for defense or hunting

An AK would be fun to build. I do not have the tools right now for an AK build.

Do you have a Ar-15 replica of the m16a2? Me personally I have been debating doing a replica of the m16 or a .308 pistol

I finally grabbed the 22 pistol out the safe. The plug has a hole for a single point qd sling. It's a fun little gun to shoot. I may pull the flash hider off the end so I can screw a can on there.
