Remember the fallen this Memorial Day. Heroes were never so valuable or so few than today it seems.

I'm an old Curmudgeon, and I still have a tendency to recognize Memorial Day on May 30th, rather than some random Monday or Friday at the end of May. The purpose of the holiday is not to give people a 3-day weekend.

If I'm at home on Memorial Day and Veteran's Day, I usually grab one of my M1 Garands or M1 Carbines, walk to the back pasture, and fire off 21 rounds in the late afternoon. Been doing that for the last 25 years or so, ever since I held my first Garand and thought about my Uncle who died in the Battle of the Bulge. All my other WWII GI uncles and Dad have died since then, which make the gesture even more meaningful.

21 rounds fired this evening with a Sept. 1941 pre-Pearl Harbor Garand and a Sept 1945 post V-J Day Garand.

A Salute to those who gave all they could give to preserve our freedom.
