Someone's grandfather dies and going through the gun collection an automatic weapon is found, possibly brought back from WWII. No one knew about it. Grandpa never told anyone or the ATF of the gun. Is there any way to maintain possession and get the gun legally registered? Not my grandpa. A situation I overheard and am curious as of the disposition of such a weapon. Thanks.

Not a way for a individual to keep a "unregistered MG" in the present days.
No way to get it registered, as the registration period ended years ago.
In ATF's eyes you can't even alter it to a semi auto, as once a MG......always a MG.
Even a museum would probably have to deactivate it permanently.
Wish I had good news.....knew a guy who used to have a "auto sear" for a AR, when ATF demanded they be registered and offered a time window of immunity to do so, he did not. So now it is a illegal MG in the eyes of the ATF. The guy died several years ago don't know where the "auto sear" went to or if it was crushed, melted or what??
