The ole bee man just got out of the woods after a week of camping and fishing in Northern Minnesota. Let’s just say the weather was wild and wooly with low temps in the 40’s with rain and more rain. We usually go in canoes as most of the boundary waters are canoe only, but there are a few areas where boats are allowed so we chose the boat camping option this time. I love the canoes but with the weather being like it was it was nice to just motor back to camp st the end of the day. We had two new people who turned out great so campfire time was a fun treat every night. We stayed M-F and had rain almost every day. The beginning of the week was better and it got worse as the week went on. As far as fishing went the bee man represented quite well. We had our best days fishing on Tuesday (caught and landed 12-13 nice fish)and Wednesday ( caught and landed 10-12 nice fish) but we fished on the way out Friday and I landed my best bass of the trip on Friday morning before the rain gods struck again. We caught smallmouth, largemouth, northern pike and perch. No walleye this time but hey I love the bass so I was happy. All were caught on artificial with the wacky worm leading the way, followed by a black and silver rapala minnow, then closed out with some different crank baits and in-line spinners. If I could find a tree that had fallen from shore into the water I could find bass. I lost a big smallie on Tuesday and Wednesday. I saw both fish as they laughed in my face when they threw my worm. Those were heartbreakers my friends but I made up for it on the other days. If you can you need to make this trip. It’s a beautiful place with great fishing. It’s not an easy trip but worth the effort. Nature pictures first then fish pics in the second post.

It was a great trip but could have done with a little less rain. Met some great people and added more memories to the pages in my mind. Looking forward to the upcoming hunting season now.

Another Labeeman adventure! Looks like great fun. Have made that trip a couple of times and was always amazed at the wild raspberries up and down the banks. Both strange and eerie to paddle at dawn fishing with the loons too. We have generally gone in July though when they have that Waffle Fest thing going on. Those people are serious about waffles up there.

Nice fish but even better memories I bet.

Did you drive or fly to MN? I really enjoy your posts about your trips to the boundary waters trips. Hopefully the area hasn't changed too much since my last trip in 1966

I think you would find things just like you remembered. They have done a great job of protecting the boundary water canoe area. The towns around the boundary waters have changed for sure as they have to keep up with the demands of the canoeists but I love the atmosphere when you arrive. We flew as I just don’t have the time to drive at this point in my life. I will drive it in the near future though when I semi retire. I’m glad you enjoy the post as I like to let people know about the greatness of the natural beauty in the good ole USA. I would have loved to be in the boundary waters in 1966. I bet you have some tales to tell.

Speaking of loons, they were out in full force. They were calling and floating in the water everywhere. The sound of a loon calling over the open water is one of nature’s most beautiful calls. As far as wildlife goes, we saw otter, ducks, turtles, chipmunks, bald eagles and lots of jays. Oh my buddy also saw some swans. One of the most fascinating things I found was a plaque on a big rock on a remote island we stopped at to eat lunch. The plaque told of the family that lived on this island from 1945-1966. What the heck they did out there boggles my mind. The winters had to be brutal. They had to have had supplies brought in to survive. Regardless it showed me the toughness of human beings.

    Beautiful country up there.

Many decades ago I lived in Thunder Bay for a year. And when I worked as a geologist I spent a good bit of time in Northern Ontario (way up in bush plane country), whose landscape looks very similar.

It's amazing to be in places that are so unspoiled by humans.
