Both are great rounds for their designed purpose. Pick the range you're most likely to shoot.
I'd say if you're regularly out at 300 yards and beyond consider the 6.5.
The 6.5 performs better at long ranges and not so well at close ranges. The velocity is fast and the bullets don't expand as well at close range compared to the 308. The 308 perfoms better at close range but not as good at distance. You'll also find that 308 ammo is cheaper and you have a better selection of hunting bullets. Don't obsess over 1/2 MOA if you're predominantly hunting. Bullet performance down range is just as important. Good luck.

140's in 65CM are not any faster than 165's from a .308. I am not sure where you get your information from, but both are sub 3000fps at the muzzle. 140's are generally between 2700-2800, and in hot loads maybe 29ish before pressure signs start to manifest. 65CM bonded bullets mushroom just fine at any range.

I have a 308 and I was pinging steel targets at 800 yards. the targets were up to 1000 yards. But the mirage made it impossible to shoot farther but im gonna keep trying til I get to 1000 yards. then im gonna shoot competition. the 308 is an awesome rifle.

I bought a .308 ruger precision rifle. My mindset was I already had .308 semi auto's so why stock another caliber? The "range" is a lot further than I am accurate with. Though I did come upon a good price on a 6.5 barrel for it on this forum, so I bought that just in case I change my mind about 6.5 in the future.
