U.S. Springfield Model 1868 Trapdoor Rifle, Serial # stamped on both the breach & 32 ½* barrel. Chambered in 50 – 70 government caliber with standard markings and features an *1869* dated breach and an *1862* dated lock, both stamped U.S.
the barrel, trigger guard, push rod and buttplate appears to have been nickel plated for use in parades or similar functions. While there were some *service* rifles plated in nickel (military testing of finishes), I do not believe this was one of the few to have had it done for testing.
