There is if you get a *Delay*.

Yup ... the NICS delay is a federal thing. After three days, the FBI gives the dealer discretion on whether or not to proceed with the sale, unless state law says otherwise.

(The theory is that the NICS system is mostly automated, but a delay means that a human needs to check records. It could be because of a common name, or a security clearance, or any number of other things that can trip up the automated system.)

I'm getting too old to understand the changing laws and politics. So, for example, a few months ago I purchased a new Beretta PX4 handgun from a local dealer, I filled out the regular yellow form, waited around the store for about an hour, then purchased and left with the gun. Is the "delay" something that the FBI wouldn't approve quickly, as the experiences I've had, then they have three days to let the sale go through or disapprove of it? I purchased another handgun at a show in Gonzales last year, a SA XDM 5.25, and again, I completed the form and went home that day with the gun. Is this not a normal process any longer? Are they just getting tougher on people to get handguns now, I do know that 2019 was a record year for handguns and ammo? Sure makes purchasing from private sellers a lot more attractive! Thanks to all for the knowledge.

You boys are lucky down south,.up here buy from CABELAS or other big stores takes 7-10 days for purchase to O.K. to pick-up... BUT, up here, buy private and it can take months to get the ''royal canadian mounted police'' approval. BUT long guns,NO PAPER WORK I can buy / sell and ship by our postal service....can even walk into CABELAS about 5 minutes from here and by as many RUSSIAN factory refurb SKS and haul them out within 15 minutes.......like ALL gun laws, they only hinder hunters/shooters...the bad guys, they don;t follow any laws but their own !!!!

During one of the lawsuits filed by the PAC my stepdad works with, it was discovered several people had “delay” issues due to shared names or possible SSN fraud. Some simply had the same name as someone on a prohibited list, or a no-fly list, or a wait / notify list... and a few others had had their identities stolen and SSNs being used in another state. If this has been going for a while, I’d request a credit report from one of the three agencies (you can get one free from each per year) and make sure there isn’t some “oopsie” being held against you.

I’ve only ever had one delay a long time ago. I didn’t put my SSN on a 4473 and forgot to check the suffix box. It flagged because someone with the same name was a registered voter in another state (my dad; I’m a Jr).

This has happened to me numerous times as well. In my case some dumbass around my age with the same name down to the middle intial had gotten busted for armed robbery and a litany of other stuff

I will openly display my ignorance now by asking the question: What is a TWIC card?
Don't have anything comparable in Texas that I am aware of. Here you walk in with a CHL/LTC whatever it is they call them now, and you walk out with a gun in about 15 minutes. Except for Cabellas.... I don't buy anything at Cabellas except fishing lures.

A TWIC card is a Federal security clearance for civilians that allows people to access secured areas, such as loading docks at ports.

    It's a result of 9/11.
