The 300 AAC was designed for suppressed AR's. If you are running suppressed then you need to be running subsonic. Why try and push a .308 down to subsonic is you don't need to. Also .308 is an AR-10 platform and one of the issues with AR-10 is that unlike AR15 there is no standard. Some guns are CMMG, some are Armalite and some (like the Matrix Aerospace that I built) are a combination. THe AR15 will let you switch between MANY calibers by swapping uppers.

Besides the .308 in the AR10 platform what would be the other calibers available?

In my own personal opinion and experience the 308 is the way to go period. There are many AR platforms to choose from as well. In recent years the AR-10 platform has become lighter, nimble and way more controllable, some even as light ,nibble and controllable as most AR -15s. The one that I choose and now carry for most hunts, as well as my truck gun is the POF REVOLUTION https://pof-usa.com/firearms/revolution/ which is not a AR-10 per say it’s basically a new take on the Ar’s a true revolution in engineering and design. You might also want to look at POF new ROGUE https://pof-usa.com/firearms/rogue/ which is a sub 6lb Rifle. It’s worth taking a look at I don’t think you’ll regret it.

I'm not a fan of AR in .300 Blackout. It's cheaper than an AR10 platform and a quiet hog gun. If he can afford to do so I recommend the 6.5 or 7.62N/.308 for hunting in open country. .300 is extremely limited in lethal range compared to the 7.62 and 5.56N 6.5 will allow him to kill any game out to 1000 yards or more and it's very popular cartridge and available as .300 is now. To me .300 is a CQB bush type caliber, and it's not much better than 7.62x39 which can be found in an AK or SKS format. If it has to be an AR type go AR10 6.5 and he will have a gun that can kill anything. You can suppress any cartridge type if you buy the proper cartridge or load your own. I have come across numerous .308 cartridges over the years that can be suppressed. If you build your own, you can have the barrel chambered for subsonic loads, and you can single feed them in for hunting purposes. If you need a rapid fire bush gun go with 5.56N and run 77g OTMs or whatever your heart desires. If you go with 7.62N/.308 you will probably save money versus 6.5 and not miss the 1000+ yard lethality. A .308 will kill well beyond ethical ranges for most animals. 6.5 gives you ultra range capability if your son decides he wants to get into the long range game.

300BLK was basically made for this. I wouldn't go .308. Also, a 300blk ar-15 can easily be converted to a variety of other calibers including 5.56 and .22lr, where as .308 is technically an ar-10 not an ar-15 and I don't think they swap to other calibers. Maybe ar-10 can swap to 6.5 or something I've never heard of, but its not as versatile as the ar-15.

300 black out supers and 7.62X39 both have effective ranges of 400 yards (300BO a little farther). 300BO is only reduced to 45 acp ranges when subsonic

I think you are mistaken there. I have seen tons of AR10 caliber options. It is just the Ar15s big brother. When it comes to ARs the sky is the limit if you can dream it someone will build it.

    The AR-10 can be had in 243, 7-08, 6.5 creed, 308, 260, and all will outperform 5.56 or 300BO

There are some companies making some really light parts. Builds are getting lighter. Bigger yes.

We still don’t have enough info to answer the question.
