I have had a rifle for sometime now but have never shot it.
I am seeimg that D&H and Magpul bith make a,dedicated magazine.
So far i have made up so.far ammo with Hornady bullets to their specs and Nosler factory and they apear to fit 5.56 mil Surplus and Colt magazines as,well as MagPul ok.
I bought the 10 and 20 round Magpul 5.56 just to use with the 300 and put tge 300blk bands on them.
Before that all i ever had was metal 20 and 30 rnd Surplus and same in Colt.
    I really rather 20rnd mags.
Just looking at the picture's the D& H 20rnd look longer than the metal 20rnd 5.56 ones.
    Thoughts.

Any standard 5.56 mag should work perfectly, I've only used pmags in mine. Keep dedicated mags for 300 and Mark them so you don't mix up ammo if you have standard AR's, that can lead to bad things.

It's like that old question: Boxers or briefs! Depends!

The lighter weight (supersonic) boolits (150 grain + down) will feed fine through standard 5.56 mags. However the big fat heavyweights sometimes have problems.

On the metal mags, the shoulder of the 5.56 rounds hits that wide ridge on the side towards the front mag and is pushed into the feed ramps. The plastic mags have a ridge on the inside. The heavy Blackout boolits are fatter up front and this ridge will push them farther to the center and off the feed ramps. It's caused me some stoppages right when I needed a quick follow-up shot.

The Blackout specific mags don't have this ridge. Since I only shoot subsonic suppressed, usually 230 grain, I've switched to these mags with no problems since.

So it all Depends on what you are shooting.

Thanks for that info. l had an order to place and they were cheap $13-14 each in metal D&H ones so picked up a few Democrat (10 round ) and a few Republican ones.
Figured having more mags can not be a bad thing.

I found that with some hollow point ammunition the way the 5.56 mags were hitting the opening in the hollow point was getting caught sometimes while moving out of the mag and into the chamber. This would cause stoppage and would also sometimes push the bullet into the casing. While the 5.56 Pmags worked with most bullets I figured the 300 blackout specific mags would have improvements over the 5.56 or they would not have been made. We build these rifles as nice as we can. Why cheap out on magazines if there is something out there possibly better that is about the same price as the 5.56 mags? I decided to tried the Magpul 300 BO mags and so far they have worked flawlessly and I have not had a single feed problem while running these mags.

Here are some side by side comparisons of the 300 Blackout Mags next to the 5.56 mags.

You can note the differences on the mag follower (left) and also the 300 mag is approximately an inch longer.

Thanks for the pictures and the write up.
I figured the same thing that i have good money in the guns and it was a small price to get them.
I have had my 1st AR since 1980 ,Colt SP1 i got used (car15) and my 20inch H Bar Colt.
I know some hollow points did not do well in one of them.
So will try the 300 with them.
To tell tge truth i have not really shot rifles in year's so when i do be nice to have less hiccups

I've got you beat by a few years, I bought a new SP1 the summer of 72. As I recall, the gun shop owner knocked a bit off and I got it for $200 out the door with a couple boxes of ammo thrown in (Dad filled out the 4473 of course). To a kid making $1.75 an hour bagging groceries that was a fortune, I took me a couple of months to earn it! When I hit USAF Basic Training (Sept 74) I was kinda bored in the M16 class. When the instructor started yelling at me, without taking my eyes off him, I field stripped and reassembled my rifle. Then I did it again blindfolded. Dad didn't like the new fangled rifle but he was old school.

The photo is my luxurious living accommodations during Desert Shield/Storm. Notice what's standing in the corner, M16 (no bloody A1) serial 313135. Yeah, I've got a soft spot for the old ones.
