[h=4]From the CDC. Website. So how many deaths has the Corona Virus been credited with.
I don’t remember seeing the below info covered on the news. Not saying it’s not serious, just seems to be getting a lot of focus from the news media.

How many adults die from flu each year?[/h]Flu deaths in adults are not nationally notifiable. In order to monitor influenza related deaths in all age groups, CDC tracks pneumonia and influenza (P&I)–attributed deaths through the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) Mortality Reporting System. This system tracks the proportion of death certificates processed that list pneumonia or influenza as the underlying or contributing cause of death. This system provides an overall indication of whether flu-associated deaths are elevated, but does not provide an exact number of how many people died from flu. As it does for the numbers of flu cases, doctor’s visits and hospitalizations, CDC also estimates deaths in the United States using mathematical modeling. CDC estimates that from 2010-2011 to 2017-2018, influenza-associated deaths in the United States ranged from a low of 12,000 (during 2011-2012) to a high of 79,000 (during 2017-2018). The model used to estimate flu-associated deaths uses a ratio of deaths-to-hospitalizations in order to estimate the total flu-related deaths during a season. For more information: How CDC Estimates Burden.
As data allow, CDC will begin reporting cumulative, in-season estimates of the influenza mortality burden. More information regarding these Preliminary In-Season Burden Estimates is available.

In the US, as of right now - 4,706 cases, 91 deaths, 74 "recovered". 987 cases & 19 deaths in just the last 24 hours. Still not sure of the criteria they're using to define "recovered", but willing to bet the standard is significantly higher than China's. At this rate, in regards to the number of cases that are closed/concluded, there are more dead than recovered in the US so far.

The problem is that people keep comparing this to the flu in terms of illness & symptoms. This is not the flu. This is viral pneumonia. It's Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) which causes the disease "COVID-19". So far, the mortality rate has been estimated at around 3.6% for people with COVID-19. Influenza is typically between 0.05-0.1%.

These are the actual stats so far of closed cases:

AGE.................DEATH RATE
80+ years old 14.8%
70-79 years old 8.0%
60-69 years old 3.6%
50-59 years old 1.3%
40-49 years old 0.4%
30-39 years old 0.2%
20-29 years old 0.2%
10-19 years old 0.2%
0-9 years old no fatalities

How the disease affects someone depends on prior health conditions. Because this attacks the respiratory system, former smokers, lung cancer patients, the immuno-compromised, etc. are considered "at-risk".

"In total, the CDC estimates that up to 42.9 million people got sick during the 2018-2019 flu season, 647,000 people were hospitalized and 61,200 died. That’s fairly on par with a typical season, and well below the CDC’s 2017-2018 estimates of 48.8 million illnesses, 959,000 hospitalizations and 79,400 deaths."

The 2018-2019 flu season resulted in a 0.14% mortality rate. The 2017-2018 flu season was 0.16%. If COVID-19 matches the same number of infected as 2018-2019 (42.9M), you can expect 1.54 million deaths.

The main issue with COVID-19 is that you can remain asymptomatic for up to 27 days. You are contagious during this time. Because the incubation period is so long, there is potential for this to spread like nothing before. The incubation of influenza is usually between 1-4 days. This means you & everyone else is well aware that you're sick pretty early on & either you and/or they will keep safe distances. With COVID-19, we're shaking hands, hugging, kissing, sharing space & air with the infected but have no idea. Also, the virus has been shown to be able to survive in aerosol form for up to 3 hours & on surfaces for several days. Generally speaking, only those showing symptoms will be tested. By that time, it's often too late & a new epicenter is born.

Everyone with an interest in governance is trying to keep people from panicking. That's commendable. But that does not warrant intentional misleading (and certainly not the proclamation that the mayor of NOLA signed). The only honest comparison between flu (or any other disease) & COVID-19 is the mortality rate when what you want to see is the percentage of cases that end with death. The flu typically does not do permanent damage to one's lungs as COVID-19 has.

Louisiana currently has 136 cases & 3 deaths. The US is currently on track to match Italy's numbers:

27,980 cases, 2,158 deaths in total. 3,233 cases & 349 deaths in the last 24 hours.

Italy's medical system is so overwhelmed, they are now refusing to provide intensive care to those over 80, leaving them to die: "The criteria for access to intensive therapy in cases of emergency must include age of less than 80 or a score on the Charlson comorbidity Index [which indicates how many other medical conditions the patient has] of less than 5."

The mayor's proclamation seems like it would prohibit CHP holders from lawfully carrying.

My 2¢...
