Or if you really wanna crank out punishment.
600 grain 458 socom subsonic with a suppressed 10 or 12.5 barrel is the definition of knock down power.

Most LEO Patrol, SWAT, HRT, and Military teams use 556 direct impingement AR variants for most applications, both suppressed and unsuppressed. They have done years of testing and research on ballistics and firearms selection. I tend to defer to their expertise when it comes to putting holes in bad guys.

Or you can listen to the internet on stopping power and specialty cartridges.

That feeling when you realize M855A1 is bringing 1371 foot pounds to the 600 gr socom’s 1336, while fitting three times as many rounds in the mag, all at a much lower price.

Kinda like do you want to pop-pop-pop 3 rounds with "Ya 9" or Clint Eastwood one round!

To be fair, civilians are not acquiring M855A1 unless it "fell off a truck."

This is true and is a product of me not wanting to calculate energy from any round and going with first result off of google. Either way, there are plenty of 62 grain rounds pushing 1300 foot pounds, so the point is the same.

    No worries.

A lot of people do bring up M855A1 in discussions, but rarely talk about how it tears up your gun and isn’t available for us normal folks. People also forget, or have no clue, that rounds like .300BLK, .458 Socom, and 6.8 SPC were designed for specific purposes and never meant to replace 5.56 ammunition.

What specific purposes? That's not something I was aware of.

Defeating body armor, short guns suppressed 24/7, attempts at creating intermediate calibers to bridge the gap between 556 and larger calibers.

Jack mentioned M855A1, which essentially made all those other obscure calibers obsolete, but it’s not available for civilians and kills feed ramps and barrels in M4’s.

To be fair, lots of .mil stuff falls off of trucks.

I’m not saying it doesn’t happen, but pointing out that it’s not something you will find browsing the LGS.

The guy asked for the *best self defense AR* and it’s funny people are suggesting things other than 556.
