I "As Hobby" at 15 started to sand and polish things. At 16 did a few things on my car.
Then branched out to Redoing Stainless Trim on Classic Cars later on.
I got good beating them back to shape on a small anvil then sanding with them with a magic marker as a guide coat. Then Polishing with a 3 step process.
I soon branched out to Aluminum with the use of hand sanding, die grinder with various rolls and DA what ever it takes.
A friend owned a plating service so I would have him tank strip or bead blast steel and do the same having him do the plating.
I still do some every now and then but am much, much slower than I used to be.

Started to cut down a trans pan but only half done and may leave it alone for a while and recoup May paint the center with a med gray inside the fins. It was a real rough casting but was free to me and was new inbox.
In case you think the transmission was crazy I did 2 of them
