What concerns me with braced pistols is that at any time the ATF can change its mind on the subject.
I’ve pondered that very possibility for some time now. So many things could happen though. Unlike the bumpstock SNAFU, I doubt POTUS would write executive orders banning the braces, which I’m certain are far more numerous than bumpstocks ever were, so if the ATF does take that stance on them there will be way more resistance than we saw with bumpstocks. The fact that the ATF hasn’t attempted to outright declare them illegal or NFA items actually gives some folks hope that the chokehold may be loosened one day and we may see some changes in what is considered NFA. Might it one day be legal to possess a SBR without paying a big tax? Maybe. They may not even require them to be registered. After all, is there much difference at all in firing a SBR and a braced pistol? My answer is no. And now that the ATF says it’s not illegal to fire a pistol from the shoulder, what’s the holdup? I’m sure there are folks that will say there’s a huge difference, and there’s no way it would ever happen, but on what do they base their claims? How can they be so certain? Somebody built a fixed stock that they call a brace (especially those blade braces) And here we are. What happens when somebody builds a combination front sight/comp that also just happens to bring the decibel level down by a huge margin? Or maybe a barrel with the same features, but it’s called something completely different and therefore it’s not considered a silencer or suppressor. Sound ridiculous? I think so too. But that’s the ATF in a nutshell.
