Greetings. Does anyone know of a gunsmith in the Baton Rouge/Gonzales area that can address Garand problems? When released, the bolt will lock up tight. The only way to release it is to slam the butt down on a hard surface while pulling back on the operating rod handle. I have stripped it down and it is lubricated well, and I don't see any issues...but then I am far from a gunsmith and I could be staring at a problem and not know it unless it jumped up and bit me. Thank you for your assistance.

I'm no help for your gunsmith question but generally when a bolt won't open like that, it's either because the bolt is not engaged in its grooves correctly or the op rod is bent/binding somewhere.

    Excellent advice .

Those guys know everything Garand and WW1 n 2 rifle.
I wrote some threads on cast 3006 for Garand use that is also cats rear in 1903 and 1917.
Shoots on par with USGI M1 Ball.
But is great for older shooters as well as the wife and kids.
The nice guys beta tested them from all over.
They love fixing problems and getting old mil surplus back in shooting condition

Where Yat Shercop. When you find your problem, post the fix here so I don't run into the same problem.

As Scott mentions, If the op rod has bent somehow, usually you would see rubbing marks either on the stock or the rod, itself. Another possibility is obstruction or misalignment (loose) of the gas cylinder.
Get back with us. I HAVE to know.
