U.S.A. –-(AmmoLand.com)- During October of 2020 National Instant background Check System (NICS) numbers of checks and numbers of gun sales set new records for the month. The number of checks was 3.3 million. The calculated number of gun sales was more than 1.74 million. The previous record for checks in October was last year, with over 2.39 million checks.

About half of the background checks done in the NICS system are now done for carry permits or carry permit rechecks.
The previous record for gun sales in October was in 2016, with over 1.32 million gun sales.
In October 2019, the number of gun sales was 1.06 million. The October 2020 number is 1.64 times the number sold in October 2019. This is in line with the trend for 2020, which is about 1.7 times that of 2019.
1.74 million guns sold in October of 2020 brings the total sold in 2020 to about 16.84 million in 2020. To break past 20 million for the year, 3.16 million will need to be sold in November and December, or about 1.58 million per month. Those numbers can easily be achieved. November and December are traditionally high months for gun sales.

2020 is not a traditional year. Politics and the fear of unrest, of police ordered to stand down in many Democrat cities and states, of a push to ban the most effective defensive tools such as semi-automatic rifles and pistols, have pushed gun sales to all-time records.

The election did nothing to alleviate the apprehensions which have lead to record gun sales in 2020. Former Vice-President Biden has repeatedly called for mandated turn-ins or registration of the most popular rifles in the country. His running-mate, Senator Kamala Harris, former Attorney General of California, has a long history of extreme anti-right to keep and bear arms positions.

The nail-biting character of the election, and the extreme distrust of the election numbers generated by the conduct of the media, portend more record levels of gun sales and background checks.

Efforts by the Democrats to restrict Second Amendment rights guarantee high gun sales.

More than 20 million guns will be sold in 2020. According to NSSF, about 40% of those sales are to new gun owners. Most of the sales are for self-defense. Higher percentages than ever before are to minorities and women.

At the end of October, there were, according to the calculated numbers, over 458 million privately owned guns in the USA.

By the end of 2020, there will be more than 460 million privately owned guns in the United States of America.

Read the first sentence, New Record for October.
Yep, I see those numbers too. What I find odd is that I’m not seeing guns in stores or much of anything online, even for a minute. If you told me that we’ve reached record numbers of ammo sales for October I’d find it just as odd. I guess it could be that there’s someone waiting with their hand out for each and every firearm rolling off an assembly line, but I’ve never known US industry and sales to work so fluid, so efficiently. If we started October with Gun stores and online retailers chock full of inventory and by the end of the month they were bone dry, the numbers wouldn’t seem that odd to me.
I imagine gun manufacturers must be climbing rungs on the stock exchange as well if business is this good.

Also, it looks like roughly half (if it’s one firearm per background check) of the background checks turned up a no go? Half? I’d expect to see the number of firearms sold exceed the number of background checks

This detailed PDF can give you more details on the background checks: https://www.fbi.gov/file-repository/nics_firearm_checks_-_month_year_by_state_type.pdf

Below is October's. Not sure why it shows shows 3,268,909 when the other PDF shows 3,305,465 but it's close enough for me.

    Here's data from Jan 2019 - Oct 2020 in a spreadsheet format.

You're welcome. Not sure if the data is helpful to anyone but I always find data and statistics interesting.

    There's a lot of data here - https://www.fbi.gov/services/cjis/nics - and I'm trying to find other useful pdf's.

A lot of it is interesting but they don't really break down the data well. For instance, this pdf will show you how many denials they've had grouped by the reason but the data isn't separated month to month. https://www.fbi.gov/file-repository/federal_denials.pdf/view. This one will show you record months. There's a lot in 2020! https://www.fbi.gov/file-repository/nics_firearm_checks_top_10_highest_days_weeks.pdf/view. I was hoping to find some data that showed how many were a first time buyer but can't find an actual PDF for that.

I have to imagine they don't know if the sale actually went through or not as the person could decide not to buy the gun after the background check passes. All they can do is track what the check was requested for and report on that.

It is interesting to me that the sales NICS have been over 1.5 million per month since March. Maybe the manufacturers are keeping up with demand but they're flying off the shelves so fast it looks like there's an actual shortage.

"About half of the background checks done in the NICS system are now done for carry permits or carry permit rechecks." That, to me, is another promising number, meaning more people getting/renewing permits.

On the topic of gun purchases, and all the crazy plans the Antis come up with to slow them down, I've often thought that "one gun a month" could be an actual goal to shoot for (pun not intended as typing, but hey, it works). I have never bought that many guns in a year, and although I'm sure there are enthusiasts out there who buy that frequently, we all know that most gun owners don't get new guns that frequently. But, what if we could start a movement to prove how silly that is, by getting as many owners as possible to make 12 gun purchases in a year? For instance, we're a household of three, so to make it cost effective, one inexpensive, crack-barrel shotgun each, a 12 for me, 20 for the wife, 410 for my son. Then an old beater revolver from a pawn shop to keep in my truck, a used .22 for plinking from a gun show dealer, a good deal from someone here on a WWII milsurp to look cool on a wall rack. Staying with some lower cost but reliable brands, one factory new pistol each to train for defensive use. Round out the year with some basic, iron-sighted rifles of various capable meat-getting calibers, new or used, and a dozen guns have now been newly or re-circulated. To really drive the point, sales from dealers involving a background check would be preferred, but even without that, an increase in private buying/selling couldn't hurt the market, and might connect more gun owners with like-minded neighbors. And nothing says I have to keep all 12, I can turn around and sell some to get money for the next. Say I start with a the beater from the pawn shop, but then sell that one to someone at a gun show next month where I turn that money towards a new gun before walking out the door. I've created two purchases for my goal for the year, and maybe one for someone else. I just imagine blood vessels popping out of the sides of the heads of bed-wetting, namby-pamby Democrats screaming "THAT'S NOT WHAT WE MEANT!"

That would be a good way to get a knock on your door from BATFE.

Hopefully in a few months alot of these new gun owners decide they don't want them anymore and flood the used gun market. :x:

Firearms and ammunition are slowly becoming more available and it will be more difficult to sell the common used pistols on BS for $700-$800 in the near future.

If these scum in Washington don't pass another stimulus Bill soon, a lot of these new guns are going to be used when most of the state's employment benefits run out.

I am actually quite surprised that there isn't more violence associated with various thefts.

I’ve been under the impression that the majority of, if not all of the heinous shootings we’ve all heard about over the past decade or better were perpetrated by loony leftist leaning crazy folks. I’m just wondering if we can expect another rash of shootings with all the lefties making all these new gun purchases.
