I understand the ammunition shortage, but I'm not seeing a firearms shortage like people claim there is. A quick look on the deals posted to gun.deals within the last 24 hours shows a variety of pistols at normal prices and are in stock. Other than items flying off the shelves, I'm just not seeing a shortage. I've heard of people paying $900 for a Glock, but they are still available for $500 elsewhere

I haven't stopped in any LGS in a few months, so I can't attest to their inventories, but seeing photos online it appears there is a good stock of firearms.

It appears to me that the firearms distributors are sending 99% of their supply from the manufacturers to the big online boys (who admittedly spend millions with them every year), which leaves your LGS with the few leftovers. I only have 1 distributor out of the 4 I regularly buy from who calls me once every 6 weeks or so to offer me one firearm (this week I got to choose between a Wilson Combat AR or a Glock 22).

I have had to get creative about how I help my customers get the firearms they are wanting and thankfully my methods have worked, but it is not easy and is not the way it is supposed to work.

Online not so much. Actually in stock at gun shops with the exception of one that I know of very much so. .45acp and 10mm pistols seem almost nonexistent.

Prices aside , Jim's in Baton Rouge is fully stocked . I haven't been to Academy in ages .

Jim's is where people go to look at a new firearms they are not familiar with then order from their favorite dealer if they decide they want one.
People that can not wait and have $$$$$$ buy from Jim's.

Deals can still be had, but it takes some elbow grease. Lots of people don't want to do that ... they get a notion in their head that they need a gun, and they want to go to the closest gun store and do the deal quickly. That's why people will pay $800 for a Glock that shouldn't cost more than $400 ... they get impatient.

In terms of stock levels: they seem to fluctuate pretty quickly. I do feel bad for the small mom-and-pop shops, who seem to be the most underserved by the large distributors.

I see people asking crazy prices on BS but I have never seen an OEM Stock Glock sell for $800.

Another thing I’m seeing is higher prices. Almost every gun shop it seems is selling guns at or above msrp. I’m also seeing a lot of used guns listed at the same price as what the gun should go for brand new. A lot of police trade ins listed at full price. I can’t see myself ever buying a pistol that has several thousand rounds through it for the same price as what brand new ones go for.

If you check Academy they have been having a good amount of guns coming and gone. I check online the days they get trucks if I’m not already their buying ammo. I’ve bought more guns from academy this year alone than I have the rest of my life. They had a 10% running for the week before and week of Veterans Day. I was tearing it up during that time frame buying everything I could that was worthwhile. In that time I got a Glock 17 for $500 and a Ruger 10/22 for $200. Also got another Maverick 88 Security to keep in my trunk. For $199 plus 10% off you can’t beat that. May be a cheaper version of the Mossberg 500 but I’ll tell you what they are damn reliable and durable. I still have an 88 that’s probably pushing close to 10k rounds by now and still going strong.

I agree with Raleigh, people don't want to wait, but even when they do buy online, they jump at the first thing they see, or get caught up with winning an auction. At my FFL a couple of weeks ago, the guy in front of me was accepting a new G19 he bought off of gunbroker for $799.00, I kinda felt bad for him. I spent a good bit of time scouring the internet and finally found a new Dan Wesson Vigil CCO for $1,049.00 shipped, a much better deal than his, I think.

That is what's happening. People are buying whatever they come across.

That being said, I think there is a distribution problem right now, not a dealer or manufacturer problem. Federal ammunition went dealer direct and direct to consumer recently as well.

Buying direct from Federal will bypass your local dealer and cost you more.
