The following calibers walk into a room. Which caliber walks out? Help me pick my new HD fighting weapon since I sold my previous favorite to a friend.

Here are the rules: All lengths are in currently-built configuration, but they all can be cut if necessary. Also, each can and will be silenced. Make sure that if you specify a shorter length, post your justification.

    1) 16" 6.8SPCII,
    2) 16" 5.56mm,
    3) 14.5" 7.62x40WT,
    4) 12.5" 308,
    5) 10" 7.62x39mm,
    6) 8" 300blk
    7) 8" 9mm

Current inclination is to cut the 6.8 to 12.5" and roll with that. Thoughts?

Considering that only 4 choices are in a configuration that doesn’t limit the performance of the chosen caliber and you want a short gun, an 8 inch .300 BLK makes sense.

    i wouldnt cut the 6.8...

12.5" 308 has ballistics close enough to 7.62x39/300 supers/556 at a fraction of the cost

8" .300aac make sure thats set up for super or subs and suppressed or not, stick with one velocity otherwise they can be a little picky, and if you dont plan oh shooting subs suppressed i would count this out... 7.62x39 is a fraction of the cost for bassically same ballistics alot more trigger time getting good with new set up

also as mentioned earlier the whole pistol brace thing is kinda screwy right now... so take that into consideration if you dont have an sbr lower, that legislation might change that

8" 9mm has close to the same ballistics as the .300 aac subs and can do it at a fraction of the cost before covid now 9mm might be more than 300aac

my vote would be 10.5" 7.62x39 or 556 for your situation...

i have both 10.5" sbrs in 7.62x39 and 556 and both are very good, the 7.62x39 with good "c products" or "acs mags" and a reputable bcg you good to go.. ammo is cheaper and 123GR sst's out of a 10.5" will do great damage on hogs, i could only imagine for HD...

By" can and will be" do you mean you will be running subs the majority of the time? If so it makes little difference because they all have been neutered to 45 acp power or less when going sub . my opinion is go with the 6.8 because it is superior to the others out of a ar-15 with hyper rounds . Second choice would be .300 because I could go short barrel and still get decent performance if and when I went hyper plus cavity back offers a great bullet especially for sub .300 .
As far as the pistol v sbr debate broken toe and the ho are not going to stop at pistol braces and sbr / semi auto will be next .

agreed if you go subsonics and/or suppressed then they are all about the same ballistics give or take.. i would look into cost per round and reliability if thats the direction

Thanks for the comments guys. I think that every person should have a primary go-to, not a safe full of what-ifs.

I already have a registered SBR, and I already own aforementioned silencers. That said, I'd intend to run supers with all of the above calibers for terminal ballistics considerations.

Also, I do reload, but for SD/HD purposes all these calibers can be bought. If you're not familiar with 7.62x40, it's just a faster 300BLK also loaded from modified 5.56 brass.

i have heard of the 7.62x40 but im not into specialty rounds... Even on reloading, i reload and dont mind hunting specialty rounds cause of the limits of rounds being used. And at well over $1 a round for factory ammo, no thanks, i tend to stick with milspec, surplus calibers, allows much needed trigger time and practice with cheaper ammo

which do you have ammo for already?

And from the latest news I wouldn't count on buying a 'pistol' without having it SBR'd...

We just dropped the brace debate temporarily. Sent a lot of Twitter shade to ATF and gave them a wakeup call. Together we are strong, join the fight!

5.56N 16” for the win. Have Specialized Armament build you a suppressor setup.

9mm, sbr with the can. Shoot 147’s. Quiet, soft shooting, large diameter holes, designed to run in short barrels, cheap to practice with. Only con I can think of is possible over penetration in a home environment, but that’s a possibility with the other choices as well. They’ll all work, which one do you have the most confidence in?
