ATF is a law enforcement agency in the United States’ Department of Justice that protects our communities from violent criminals, criminal organizations, the illegal use and trafficking of firearms, the illegal use and storage of explosives, acts of arson and bombings, acts of terrorism, and the illegal diversion of alcohol and tobacco products. We partner with communities, industries, law enforcement, and public safety agencies to safeguard the public we serve through information sharing, training, research, and use of technology.

So remind me how regulating silencers/suppressors actually helps safeguard the public? And how creating "rules" pertaining to pistol braces helps safeguard the public. And how partnering with industries to the tune of sending cease and desist notices to singular manufacturers of legal products (Q LLC most recently) helps safeguard the public?

I'm sure there are plenty of positive things that BATFE does...but there is also toxic leadership in the agency with an agenda to find ways to further restrict the rights of citizens. This is not for safeguarding the public. It is for other gains.

Only law abiding folks buy into that way of thinking.
Only law abiding folks are affected by the actions of the ATF.
Wanna take a guess at what percentage of criminals who carry a gun actually do so legally? How many purchased their firearms legally? Background check? How many purchased their firearms at all? How many give a hoot about the laws or ATF rules? I’m thinking not very many.
The actions of the ATF are keeping criminals safe tho...

I seem to recall the 93 AWB containing a list -a rather long list- of firearms to be banned or modified so as to not fit the then-definition of “assault” (ie non-sporting) weapon. And not a single one of them had been confiscated in connection with a violent crime. Example: calico. What?!? I remember a guy at the club I grew up shooting at had one. Then another. Then sent that one back for a third. Then gave up. He was lucky to get two shots strung together without some kind of failure. Mac-11... yeah, ok. Several of those came thru (thanks, gangsta rap music). Off the bench I’d be shocked to see one hit the broad side of a barn with the second shot. I’d be shocked if the third shot landed in the same zip code as the first two. Bayonet lugs. Yep. Removing those definitely made an 8-lb stoner platform with an 18” barrel, fixed stock, and no optics provisions less dangerous. Rifle grenade attachments? Dagummit, there goes robbing the local Dollar Tree with a 4-foot 15-lb M1 Garand.

None of this is actually coming from the 1811 series ground level federal agents who are charged with doing the actual work. It’s bureaucrats desperate to justify their own continued employment and bloated comp packages. In the 30s the DEA’s predecessor agency almost got axed. Prohibition was over and big pharma wasn’t a thing. So -boom!- they campaigned successfully to make weed a schedule 1 drug and their budget was off to the races. ATF SESs are probably now doing the same thing, both to keep their jobs (and the heritage of the agency) and to curry favor with those steering this sinking ship we call our experimental republic.

But that’s just my delirious two cents’ worth...

This is a very rational and reasonable explanation for why the Firearms part of BATFE is a frivolous waste of money.
