I was reloading some .45 this evening and noticed some new Federal brass looks to be using small primers instead of large pistol primers. Anybody else run into this? See Photo. The new brass in in the middle.

This, was done long ago. Years ago.
As lead safe primers, are only made in small.
Been close to 10 years now that 45acp has small and large.

Yes I ran into this a couple of years ago, after causing several stoppages on my 650 I decided to separate all my brass before I start reloading, it's not just Federal, I had some Speer also. I just put all the small primer brass in a box and when I get enough to make it worth my while changing to small primers on that press I'll load them.

I don't know if it is Champion or not as it is mixed in with all of my other 45 brass. I've been loading loading 45 for about 5 years now and this is the first I have come across this. Guess I've been lucky until now.

Looks like I'll be sorting all of my 45 brass from now on.

Yeah when you buy brass you have the option for large or small primers. But when you snag up once fired its a mix. I reload 45acp and have both large and small pistol primers. I ran into that years ago. Large primers give a little bit more power behind the bullet.
