Sometime in '90 or '91, S&W brought out an orange plastic follower that increased the capacity by one round.
    .
correct, the magazine with an orange follower was shipped with a the model 915, which is damn near identical to this one (my first pistol was a 915), except it didn't have ambidextrous safety / decock

The 915 is an "economy" version of the 5904; it came along right after the orange follower, but didn't last long in the catalog... guess S&W had dollar signs in their eyes, banking on the Stigma...
    .
the 915 was removed because of the AWB, mine was produced in early 1994 (as verified with S&W through a serial number check). It was replaced on the shelf by a model 910, exact same gun with a 10 round magazine

Last time I browsed that section of the gun cabinet at my local dealer the 910 was still in production.
