.......Clint Guidry, acting president of the Louisiana Shrimp Association.

It’s not clear exactly what’s made the fishermen sick. Guidry says it’s breathing in vapors from a combination of the oil and Corexit, the dispersant being used to break down the oil, but Tony Hayward, the chief executive officer of BP, has another theory.

“Food poisoning is a very big issue,” Hayward said Sunday. “We have to be very mindful of that.

Guidry was having a cup of coffee Monday morning at a marina in Lafitte, Louisiana, when he heard Hayward talking on CNN. The marina had a pool table.

“I couldn’t believe it. First, he makes our boys sick, and then he insults good Cajun cooking,” he said. “If he’d been right here, I would have shoved the pool cue down his throat.”

    The definition of facism:

Facism: dictatorial movement: any movement, ideology, or attitude that favors dictatorial government, centralized control of private enterprise, repression of all opposition, and extreme nationalism

In this case the Federal Government is telling forcing BP to handle it. If they step in at any point BP could in court try to get the US Government to pay for it afterwards saying they made it worse. Then the taxpayers would be on the hook for even.

This situation is the exact opposite of facism. Please before rant try educate yourself so you don't sound like a dumb a$$.

Actually, although BP is technically in charge, mostly they are just signing the checks. The government is running the cleanup, and has been doing so since the beginning. BP is present, and they get some input on things, but not much. I know three people working on the response, and all three have independently told me the same thing. Coast Guard is in charge, but you've got a whole bunch of people from various agencies all clamoring for things to be done their way. The state guys have handled spills before, and are pretty good, but the federals are not helping a lot. Obama made it worse by sending more top level agency folks down. They are political types, running around screaming for action while throwing up road blocks right and left. Lisa Jackson of EPA is one of the worst.

The spill is so big that every normal resource is tapped out, so they've pulled in a bunch of people who aren't trained in incident response and have no clue what to do, to fill some of the spots. Some of new people aren't equipped, either in training or mentally / emotionally, to handle a crisis situation.

Basically you've got too many people involved, and they aren't following the incident command system mandated by regulations. A lot of oars in the water, all pulling in different directions. Coast Guard should fix this -- that's what they normally do when they see spill responses going bad -- but they are part of the problem on this one.

And there's no way BP is getting out of paying for this. If the spill is federalized, then the Feds run it their own way with zero BP input, and the Feds deliver the bill to BP afterward. That's not much different than what's happening now.

How much experience does the Obama Administration have in capping deep water blowout oil wells? I would think that the expertise in this area lies within the oil companies.

    LOL.sure, it would seem so.

    Google Ixtox

Same ole same ol........this blow out is old news, happened b 4 ....and still the fed allowed DWH., ( and many others ) to drill deep water wells

Ixtox blew 15 K barrels a day for over 2 months, same conditions except depth much less

Still, Fed had no problem allowing drillling inspite of the Ixtox mess, saying there was 0 (zero ) plan for what happened with DWH

While we want less Gvt, the main job of FedGvt is to protect us, not control us

Somebody in the fed is asleep @ the switch..............again

Pretty much true. They had ideas, same ideas they had 15 years ago; try a pollution dome, try a top kill, try to stab into the BOP, but the best bet is drilling relief wells. But there's never been a sure fire way of dealing quickly with a deepwater blowout.

There's all kinds of things that could happen, to any of us any day, but you end up playing the odds. Given reasonable precautions, bad things don't happen, unless they are "acts of god". BP didn't take the appropriate precautions. And it wasn't really "BP", it was a small group of BP employees (maybe with some assistance from Halliburton or others?).

Corexit has been being used around the world for years, remember the Exon spill in Alaska. If there was anything better or safer the EPA and DEQ wouldn't let BP use it.

I think there are only 2 approved dispersants. The Corexit MSDS doesn't look to bad, especially since it's spread out so much. I suspect the guys got sick from heat/ dehydration/ seasick.

Grim, there's been some public concern about the dispersants evaporating and raining down on people's homes. They seem to think that it will be a stronger version of acid rain. Did you happen to notice the PH on the msds?

It's kind of hard to compare the Horizon with the Ixtoc #1 well. That well was run by the state owned MEXICAN government (PEMEX), NOT the US nor the MMS had ANY input. But at the end of the day, you know what stopped the well?

    Drilling 2 relief wells!!!!

    Hmmm... Something sounds familiar!

The dispersants have a density slightly heavier than water and will sink to about 30 feet into the gulf. The ph will change when in contact with oil. Contrary to popular belief, they are applied just like a crop duster applies pesticides, very close to the water's surface, not 25,000 feet like some have reported. Also, these chemicals aren't used close to shore.
