I first heard about Russia doing this successfully the week the spill started. It would only take a small nuclear detonation to seal the hole. They used to do underwater nuclear testing all the time. Why is it such a big deal?

If memory serves me we have an agreement pac with other countries about doing any more nuclear explosions and test. Seems I recall something along those lines from the 80's.

I would be willing to say we have non-nuclaer weapons that would generate enough heat to turn the rock into a molten soup that would quickly dry and seal the hole.

So there is still a Russian well leaking for years now and the location is unknown. I find it a bit disturbing if that is true.
