I have often wondered to myself, “Self, it would be awesome if my BUG (S&W 442) would use the same ammo as my issued primary.” I have an extra cylinder for my 442 lying around so I might give this a try.

    http://www.pinnacle-guns.com/revolver.asp

Would this be feasible? I’m sure it is much easier to throw a moon clip into the cylinder than it is fooling around with speed strips or speed loaders.

Revolver gurus, I would appreciate your input.

    Thanks,

It may be possible to do so...I think, but even if you had an extra cylinder you could convert to 9mm,your going to have accuracy issues...major accuracy issues. The bore of your 442 is rifled for .38 special, not 9mm so I'm assuming that accuracy will be way off and running 9mm loads through it could eventually ruin the bore. I'm not exactly sure that what I just stated is fact but it just seems logical that issue might pop up in case you decide to do this project. You may have to ask the more seasoned gurus about this one.......I'm just a revo guru wannabe.

Here is a link from someone who has done it already.

Cujo, I see your point, but I'm not sold on it. BTW, you are an expert on one thing, SELLING GUNS!

LOL Geez...guess it's better than selling crack. :D

Personally,I like .38 over 9mm so I keep my 642 just the way it is. I see your point, though to be able to standardize your carry ammo on duty. My BUG is a Kel Tec P11 and my off duty (post)is my 642. The P11 accompanies my XDs on post.

Just buy a 357 MAGNUM J-frame and shoot the downloaded Remington 357's. Out of a two inch snub barrel, you should see around 1050fps with 306 ft-lbs ME, within the lower end of 9mm territory. Longer barrels equal more velocities higher up the 9mm scale. No mods to the gun are necessary, and you can keep the speed strips.

The short barrel Speed Gold Dot 357 load comes in a close second at 294 ft-lbs from a two inch barrel. If you can find them.

Thanks Posse, but I have a problem. The people who sign my check say NO .357 MAG!

one of the guys on the hide mentioned shooting 9X23 in it after the conversion. I suppose as long as the original gun was actually a 357 before the conversion it wouldn't be an issue, would it?

Sounds interesting. The 9mm is hotter than .38+p. The .38 bore will be .002" oversized for the .355" 9mm bullets, but I doubt you'll notice a huge decrease in the accuracy of a 2"bbl gun.

You could also have your J-Frame cut to accept moon clips in 38 special if you like. It's faster to reload a moon clip than a speed loader. I know that S&W use to make a 9mm snub nose revolver but they're scarce now. By that I mean people who have them don't part with them very often.

wouldn't it just be easier to get the hammer shaved off this one? I know it's *only* a Taurus, but it's only a revolver too. It's also only $370 already chambered in 9mm.
