This post really is to help out a friend. No. Really.

Gent recently discovered a war bring back from his grandfather. It is NFA item, of that I have no doubt. But...his GF paid the $200 tax and had the weapon registered to his wife, my Bud's grandmother. It was sent to US, from ETO, during WW2. This thing has sat unknown in a chest for over 50+ years. Friends mother recently died and in going through her things, the weapon and it's original registration paperwork were discovered. He has told me there are no other heirs, but this family has not had formal wills, sucessions, etc. through the generations. Again, he is only heir as far as I know, and the weapon was at one time registered. He has that documentation.

So...who can the BS members recommend as an attorney for my friend to speak with? He was close to his grandfather, and has also discovered paper items that indicate this weapon was used by same during WW2, rather than US issue equipment. He wants to follow the law and get this properly registered/transferred to him if he can.

So...who/what do you know? Out of my area on this, he's not a "shooter" per se, but this thing holds family value to him for obvious reasons. Thanks for any assistance you can render.

Call the ATF office and get the answers from them. They can at least direct you to the guys at the home office that can give you the answers your looking for.

If this firearm was not declared and registered than the best you can hope for is to donate it to a museum.

Look at the posting from Nolacopusmc on NFA firearms just down from yours. It might give you some insight to your questions.

This guy might be able to help answer your questions.
In addition to being a lawyer, I'm almost positive that at one time he had a Class 3 Dealers FFL.
The down side is that he's located in Lafayette. He could probably answer your questions over the phone or guide you in the right direction.

His ph. & fax numbers are at the bottom left hand corner of the link.

    I hope this helps.

Mouthpiece is a lawyer that deals with NFA trusts. He might be able to help.

The ATF allows a one-time transfer of NFA items to their lawful heir. It sounds like it would fit for this situation. Check out the ATF Form 5.

Pretty sure it was. Only thing I've seen IS the original paperwork. Shows that his granddad paid a $200 tax and that he (the GD) listed the owner as the guys grandmom. Dated from 1944, it lists the specific gun, serial number, etc.. Cool huh?

THANKS TO ALL who gave advice. I'll pass this stuff along to my Bud.
