Open Carry question to Shreveport PD

Was on SPD's Facebook page and posed the question: What is SPD's take on civilians who open carry with a handgun? I'm talking about people who can legally own a firearm.

Their response was: Hello Thomas: As police officers we take an oath to support the Constitution of the United States of America and clearly we are going to let that obligation guide us in our responsibilities of fairly and equitably enforcing the laws of our land. Before taking any kind of enforcement action, officers must believe that what they are about to do is moral, ethical and legal. We are are bound by the laws that govern us all and we will not operate outside of those boundaries set forth by our legislators. So, as far as our take on legal issues goes, our stance is that we are going to faithfully and impartially, with common sense and discretion, enforce the laws that we all have to live by- no more, no less.

--> This spot for sale <--

with all seriousness, that response sounds like it came through the legal department.

That was a pretty fancy answer. Does it mean they won't be buying any motocycles?

A response nonetheless. I would suggest you contact Yale and have his group send the Shreveport PD the LOCAL info; if they haven't already. And furthermore, would tell you their mission statement is to help educate local police departments on OC.

I don't OC anymore (unless the necessity ever arose), but did go to their website and read their stuff. It is enlighhtening.

SPD just received a number of mountain bikes from one of the casinos to use in street interdiction. Would hate to to be riding a bicycle with all their gear in this heat.

Their response to my question did sound rather like a pat answer and from their legal department. I rarely OC in Shreveport or Bossier City. Just was curious about what their policy was and what I could possibly expect. Not all PD's treat this subject equally. I know this subject has been beaten to death here and don't mean to start yet another OC thread. Just wanted to add what the SPD's take on this was.

Well then, I would say an interesting thread might be the "offical" department stance on Open Carry from as many local Louisiana pd's as would answer the question.

I would have expected the following answer from their official site

"We like to detain individuals with firearms, because they are dangerous to others. We normally confiscate the gun, and it disappears in a sea of paperwork. These usually supplement personal collections of employees. Occasionally we beat and imprison those we don't like and torture detainees until we get a fake confession."
I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed, and not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.

I don't carry a gun because I'm paranoid. I carry a gun because there are real threats in the world.

Wasn't the SPD chief the one that said a couple of years ago that in his city, he was the law, and the constitution meant nothing in his jurisdiction, or something like that?

That answer was a polite way to say we will do what we've always done, and we will not answer your question directly because we don't have to. NAH NA NAH NA NAH NAH!
