You don't want the government knowing what guns you have because it's possible they can pull a Katrina and come Get them, again. You make their job way easier if they already have a nice organized list of what to come steal from you.
Not even being tinfoil-y. Deathly serious. They've proven they Can because they Have already. They Will try it again.

I'm not that paranoid but I can see your concerns. I still prefer digital to pen in paper any day. The local cops already have a copy of my FFL 03 application so I am sure they will be at my house.

Pretty smart people at Apple, as elsewhere. Don't you think if they want your info they would have a way of getting it as you enter it into your computer and external
hard drive ? Be that as it may, I understand why you would need an inventory for insurance, police reports, etc. I do not understand the need for protecting the info with secrecy
and encryption. So someone gets the list of your guns. What can they do with the info that would be harmful to you. "You" being gun owners in general.

Let's say somehow they do decide to ban guns. Chances are they can use the patriot act to get any online information they want about any potential gun owners. That includes any apps on your phone, any data from google documents, all your files from dropbox, etc etc. Now they have a full inventory of all your guns, all of their serial numbers, what you paid for them, how often you shoot them, etc etc. They can see when the document was last updated by it's "modified date" so they can tell how long ago you had in that document that you had all those guns in your possession. Now when they decide to make it mandatory everyone turn in their firearms peacefully they'll know what you didn't turn in.

Very unlikely such an event would happen but I'd rather not take the chance. I guess my collection isn't enough to keep it in excel or in an app. I've got a notepad in a smaller safe hidden in the closet with the info in it. I guess I'm SOL if they go in that safe and decide to take the notepad too :dunno:

What kind of file does it export data to?

I'm not looking at it right now but I think a text file. I got it to mess around with. It's pretty cool. You can calculate drops at different distances, put in what ammunition types you use on specific guns, maintenance reports and all on each firearm.
