So I have encountered a certain situation where it would have been nice to have cameras inside my residence. I am looking for high quality wireless camera system (at least four infrared cameras) to put inside and outside my house. Not only for burglary type situations but every day knowledge of what is taking place inside "The Crib".

If anyone has information on a certain brand to go with please let me know. I want to have the recorder in house and I am not interested in any alarm company cameras. Looking to buy very soon so give me yalls thoughts on this please.

I am in the same boat as you. I want to have installed about 3-4 camera's at my house. Mainly for me it would be outside camera's though. I have an ADT alarm system and depending on the cost associated with it I might consider connecting the two. I definitely want DVR capability!!

Well in my experiance a residential alarm system is just an early warning that you have been burglarized. By the time the alarm company calls the home owner, then calls the police, the police get dispatched, and then arrive on scene it is far to late. I have an alarm system in my house from the previous owner but it is not monitored... as a matter of fact everytime you open the door it beeps and gets a bit aggravating lol. I will def PM NOLA_jack and get the low down on what I need. Does he sell them/install them or is he just in the know?

From my understanding he works for ADT and has a great wealth of knowledge in the field as well. I am sure I am way out of his AO but you might not be. I cant remember if he does the camera thing on the side as well though, maybe. :dunno:

FWIW, my brother was telling me about some research he had done on the matter, and he found cameras that utilize your wifi in your house to stream the video to an app on your iphone (if you have one). He was saying the app allows you to control the cameras (i.e. move them around). I also believe they are motion censored. about $100 a camera. Best of luck!

Can you post it here so I can see it as well. I dont want to have to tie him up responding to two people via PM. Unless he wants to come in here and lay down some knowledge.....

Heavenly Home Security in Baton Rouge has a nice system with fair prices.

I know a guy who had cameras installed on his house. They were installed inside and outside his home. It has battery back up in case of power failure.
The nice part is he can pull up the system on any computer and on his iphone. Day or night the cameras are very clear.
Be aware that you pay for what you get in a surveillance system.

Don't forget. If you get a system that ties in to the net, not only can you view the inside and outside of your house, but so can a hacker and the government.

Someone told me that ADT sells equipment to non members without a contract. They gave me a number of a guy who deals through them. Called him and talked a bit. For two cameras, either wireless or wired, it was like $2100:eek4:.

So I start looking online and find all kinds of cameras cheap as all hell. As far as quality, I don't know how good the cheapies are, so I looked for more expensive cameras. Found a couple awesome ones for $300 that are wireless, motion activated, IR nightvision, etc. that looked great. I'm more interested in what they call lipstick or bullet cameras (has to do with the shape). Seems they would be harder to spot than several others.

So, it makes me wonder just what was so awesome about the system he wanted to sell me. I'm going to have to PM NOLA_jack as well.

    OK, so cameras...

There are a lot of things that go into deciding what you need for camera systems, as it is defiantly not a 1 size fits all type of thing. The first thing to consider is your needs. Night vision(IR), range of the shot, 24 hour recording, seeing something very specific that never really moves, like a cash register drawer, etc. etc.

If it is a long shot, you might want to consider a verifocal camera(one where you can adjust the focus of the camera yourself), or look at different lens sizes. The standard we use is a 3.6mm, its good for almost everything, besides specialized situations, and is what I would suggest to almost anyone.

If you need night vision, get a camera that exceeds the range of the shot by a good bit. Cameras will be listed as having a __ft. night time range. At the end of that range, the quality is always crap and if you are any where near pushing the limits of that, you wont be happy with the end product.

For DVRs, be sure to get one that can support the resolution of the cameras you are buying, otherwise the shot on the monitor will look great, but the playback will suck. DVD burners are falling out of fashion in favor of hard drives from which you can upload the data to a thumb drive, external hard drive, or in some cases directly to your computer. Most DVRs allow motion based recording, where you would have to go in and delete certain grids in the picture where motion is normally occurring, like trees, flowers, grass(if you dont mow worth a ****), ceiling fans, wind chimes, etc. etc. etc. I don't suggest using this feature, because I don't see any real benefit to it. With a 500GB hard drive space and 4 cameras, you can usually get at least 20 days of recording. Also, disabling too much of the picture means you may not pick something up. This isn't likely with small things, but doing bushes or a tree should come with serious concern.

For camera resolution, I always suggest 640 lines, however 480 is what I would consider minimum. You wont be able to see licence plates, or moles on someones face, but it is pretty much good enough, especially if the pool of suspects is people you know.

I ALWAYS suggest hardwired cameras, running over siamese cable with BNC connectors. As far as durability and reliability it simply cant be beat. Cat5e cable is weaker and I've seen where it has been stepped on in attics or had boxes dropped on it, and broken the conductors inside. Wireless is an option of last resort, usually reserved for multistory houses, flat roofs, apartments that don't allow the drilling of holes, etc. They are very easy to install, however they are vulnerable to all kinds of interference(i've had problems with everything from baby monitors to the new electric meters which can be read by entergy wirelessly), and are usually less durable and more expensive.

I'm a firm believer in the pangris line of thinking, buy once cry once. If you want 2 cameras, get a 4 channel dvr, if you want 4 cameras, get an 8 channel dvr, etc. The price increase isn't that much, in moving from one to the next, and having the ability to add cameras later is a good thing.

For brpdsoldier and his questions about indoor cameras, the first thing I always ask is if you are renting this property out or live there personally. If you are renting the property out, scratch the camera idea, it will make renters extra nervous. If you aren't renting, I still don't do cameras in bedrooms or bathrooms, as it opens up a whole can of legal worms. Same with audio surveillance, I just don't do it.

If this doesn't clear everything up, let me know and I'll try to cover it.

I don't know where 2100 came in, but I know we do that same deal for 1700. I'm not going to tell you weather or not that is a good deal, I'll just say to do some price shopping and reach your own conclusions.

Depends what you want an alarm system for. I don't care if they grab the TV and run. The alarm system gives them about 3-5 minutes to get into the safe and get my guns
and I don't think the best of them can do that.

Good point. I do tell people that have alarms to also have a camera or two around the house so we know what we are looking for when we get there.
