I want to know what types of Martial Arts are in Baton Rouge. I've done a google search, and it's not the best. I want to know where are the good dojos, and what they teach. Not every style will be listed on the schools website (sometimes Instructors will rent out times where they can teach their own style). I want to train and compete again. I have been in Okinawan and Japanese Martial Arts since I was little, so I don't really want to get into Kung Fu or Korean styles. Also, are there weapons classes, what type and where (don't forget: in Baton Rouge)?

I know there are a lot of people who enjoy competing and have done or still doing Martial Arts around here. I would love your imput.

I'm way beyond competition age, but I still train in Taekwondo and Iaido. I've heard good things about this jiu jitsu school. http://www.heiwashin.org/

At my age I enjoy the Iaido, but there's no competition in it and some people compare it to watching paint dry. Get my competition fix from tkd though I don't need as much nowadays. The Iaido dojo has bounced around a bunch over the last several years so if you want to come watch PM me. Bring your paint drying glasses though. :)

Well, you specified no Korean styles, so my own art of Tang Soo Do is out. If you change your mind, though, PM me.

I participated in tang soo do an hapkido
I really enjoyed both of these. I'm not sure were it is offered in baton rouge though. I took it with John griffin and frank chartier here in st. Amant. Both very proven masters.
Hapkido focuses on a self defense "offense" and involves weapons to defend and how to subdue an attacker that has a weapon. It was my favorite of the two.

I have a friend who goes to White Crane on O'neal. I know he competes regular throughout the nation with that school.

Thank you for the info! This was the school I went to with my friend last night. It was fun, but I want to see everything offered before I commit myself again.

I changed my mind about no Korean styles. I'm looking into information about the Hapkido schools taught by the Kimms.

la kickboxing academy at coursey and sherwood forrest. They have had world champions teaching there a time or two..in MMA.. Now as to style.. I cant speak to that..

I noticed a lot of traditional weapons, which I like, as well as a more offensive aproach while maintaining control and form. I'm going to look more into Hapkido.

Do you know what style is taught there? Is that the Aikido school?

White Crane is the form taught at White Crane Kung Fu. Started by Louis ILLAR it is the oldest and most successful school of its type in the BR area.
Kimms Hapkido started by He Young Kimm it is the oldest and most successful school of its type in the BR area..

There used to be a good Kuk Sool Won school in BR years ago. Taught by Grandmaster Kim If I recall. That would be a good all around art. All empty hand distances and and types of techniques were covered and weapons too..

I took Combat Hapkido, plus Wado Ru, and TKD, for a while before I moved back to LA. It was great. However the only two schools I can find for Combat Hapkido that in LA are up north. Shreveport and Nachitotches I think. I am in Slidell area now and can't find anything around here except for TKD. Not what I am wanting.

Hapkido is great. More rounded than Tang Soo Do. Do that one if you have to choose between those two.

    Good luck in your search.

The Kuk Sool Won school you are referring to is the same as the original Hapkido school run by He Young Kimm.
Jim Su Kimm (deceased) who was affiliated with He Young Kimm used to teach more of a Combat style of Hapkido in Baton Rouge.

    AMA is a good school.

I'm curious about Iron Tiger as their students really cleaned up at the last two Cajun Opens.
I was pretty impressed with them.

Look into Wall to Wall for a great judo dojo. Our club here in Lafayette is real close to them. They actually ran a tournament last Saturday and had a great turnout. I am pretty sure they also teach Akido but I am not 100% on that. I know they just moved from Walker and are doing well at their new location. Our club is actually going to go there in a few weeks for my 3rd degree brown belt (sankyu). Their head instructor James Wall is a 3rd or 4th degree black belt, I am not 100% on that either.

Not to resurrect an old thread but I invited gunguy11 to come by Iron Tiger and see for himself instead of misinterpreting what someone else said.
He never showed and no I see he was banned.

If you want to learn Hapkido, come take a free lesson at Iron Tiger and see if it is what you want.

    - where do you practice Tang Soo Do? Still an active student?

I studied at PKSA Karate on Jefferson Hwy near Drusilla. I'm no longer an active student though, because there weren't enough adults there. (I hear that more adults are coming in.) It's not a bad system, as long as you concentrate on what works and ignore what doesn't. You'll learn some pressure point stuff, some grappling, arm bars, escapes, etc.
