Anything wrong with bushmaster these days? I carry one daily on duty and love it. Used to hear bunch of people talk about em, but haven't seem them mentioned in this thread once.

I don't think there's anything "wrong" with them. However they are commercial grade ARs with a few areas that could be better, particularly on the BCG. Either way, even though they're good for most people's usage there's just better rifles for the money which is why you don't hear much about them. Given the quality level and production capacity they would be more in line with the market if they were priced around $650. But for $900+ you can have a much better rifle for the same price.

One word for the money you're looking to spend.

    Colt.

Or (hey, I can't ever seem to limit it to one word, sorry) have you considered RRA? Rock River has "basic's" in the $800 range and their Operator series is rather nicely appointed at a retail of $995. Of the two however, I'd still go Colt.

    Just one mook's .02.

I was in the same boat as you a few months ago. I had 1k to spend and did a ton of research. I ended up buying a Windham Weaponry (use to be the Bushmater crew before they were bought out). I liked the specs on their rifles and only spent $840. Used the rest of my budget to get 5.56 ammo and a few Pmags. About 400+ rounds and not a single problem. I love mine!!

At the end of the day it's about what feels good on your hands

I just bought a RRA and I love it. I also have 3 colts and 1 bushmaster. They are all great rifles, all reliable. I think in today's market RRA is the best deal for your money. IMO.

This is my standard purchase list for someone on a tight budget to build a good fighting rifle:

    $270 PSA barreled upper - http://palmettostatearmory.com/inde...ped-upper-without-bcg-or-charging-handle.html
    $20 charging handle - http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=...M4/Product/AR-15-M16-CHARGING-HANDLE-ASSEMBLY
$150 BCM BCG - http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-...Auto-M16-p/bcm bolt carrier group auto mp.htm
    $115 PSA Complete LPK - http://palmettostatearmory.com/inde...ate-armory-classic-lower-build-kit-10340.html
    Magpul MBUS Rear $55 - http://palmettostatearmory.com/inde...ights/magpul-mbus-rear-backup-sight-gen2.html
    ------------------
    $610
    /NOT INCLUDING SHIPPING/

Get you a good sling, learn how to use it, and eventually maybe get yourself a red dot and you're looking at a good time.

There are some upgrades I would make, which is to get a Daniel Defense A1.5 Fixed Rear Sight (I don't like folding sights or plastic sights on principle) and some people like upgrading to the $40 BCM Gunfighter charging handle... you could eventual swap handguards...

Basically you're getting a carbine that no one has **** to say about unless they're talking brand-name elitism. That ****'ll run all day long, no matter what you feed it, and it gives you a good base rifle to start with and tinker with.

Sorry if some links are expired, I've been using that list a bit and too lazy to update. They should be pretty self explanatory and easy to find the stuff on the sites it links to, if their URLs shifted.

If you /really/ want to tinker more and want to buy/borrow the tools, you can build your own upper, but I find that it really doesn't save much/any money with a 5.56 gun. 300BLK... yea... you save money by assembling your own upper receiver assembly, due to current prices, but 5.56 guns are so mass produced, I guess it keeps assembly prices down.

i dont know if ive just been lucky or what but ive never had a problem with my colt, bushmaster or my spikes. they all shot the same and unless i changed out the pistol grip, stock or fore end they all felt the same too. if i had another grand to spend on just a gun, id probably go with another 6920 (colt M4 roll mark @ walmart) but to be honest thats probably a little more pricey if its just going to be taken out once a month to shoot at the range. if you just want a range toy and wont plan on actually abusing it i would look into palmetto state armory. pretty sure you can have a complete gun for ~700 and that leaves you enough left over for a eotech or aimpoint if you want optics or some mags and ammo

or if youre like the rest of us you would say **** it and buy both :D

I'd love to see the rifle you built using that list, especially since the parts list you posted doesn't contain an actual lower. Its amazing how inexpensive something can seem if you don't actually buy all the parts for it.

Sorry, I trimmed out the part about sourcing a lower receiver locally from the post I copied it from, unintentionally. Add $50-100 depending on what lower you want.

$710 is still pretty ****ing cheap, compared to any comparable off-the-shelf rifle, there, Hondo - don't be such a douche over an oversight when someone's just trying to help.

Where can you find a 50 dollar lower?

It's also a lot easier to build a rifle when you work at a buisness has the tools.
Yea, because the $7 punch set I got at Harbor Freight and the hammer and tape is so hard to acquire. (I linked him to an assembled upper assembly) But even if you wanted to do an upper from parts, it can be done with a $15 armorers wrench and some ingenuity - I've used a 2x4 as an upper receiver block on one of my guns before.

I built my rifles before ever working at a gun shop. I also don't work at one anymore, either.

All that aside, if someone thinks you need to be a gunsmith to put an AR together, they're incredibly incompetent behind tools and I question whether or not such a person should even be behind a trigger. ARs are like adult LEGO man. It's -that- easy.

Use the guides on ARFCOM if you're not familiar and take it easy.
