There's lots of pit mixes where I live now, and the owners don't bother keeping them locked up.
My dog is kinda stupid and overly friendly. The pit mixes are pretty agressive, and I have an asp I was issued in Iraq which I figure would be very effective as a deterrent and a breaking stick if necessary.
Is it legal to carry an asp(openly) in la?

I dont know how legal it is, but if you took the time to explain to them if they stopped you, I am sure they understand.. Especially in Houma.. You are right, they are everywhere..

take it from a runner who has been attacked by every dog on the planet at one time or the other. i use a fiberglass rod like the ones you see on gocarts with the flag on the top cut to 3' 6" . then take some duct tape and make a handle on the big end. this set up works like magic. even just the sound of it swoshing through the air will stop most dogs. i did have to hit a german sheppard one time that attacked me but it only took one whack across his nose and another to the head and he decided i was not worth the chase. 99 percent of the time you never have to hit the dog, but when you do he will remember and he might bark when you go by but he will keep his distance. i have been using this since 1974 after i tried pepper spray and other usless tactics. it's light weight and is as thin as a pencil and does not look threating to the neighbors or law enforcement.

I carry a ruger LCR when I walk my dog. One day my wife asked who was I worried about while walking a 80 lbs. german shepherd. It's not who but what, and it's the loose pit bulls. I'm not going to let one of those mess up my dog, and I don't know how well I can swing an asp while holding the leash on a 80 lbs. shepherd. I do think I could put the muzzle on the pit's head and pull a trigger.

If your going to carry the asp, I'd go with this. If it really is illegal, I'm pretty sure the officer would just tell you to leave it at home next time. Not like your lurking behind the dumpster of your local convinence store with an asp or something.

I just keep a slim knife clipped to my shorts. Recently got one of the BS spyderco and its so slim I've made it my running knife. I don't feel it in my shorts.

I got chased by a dog in Houma. A chow. I recommend bullets.

There are boxers and chows down there like crazy, but there are so many fighting dogs that dont quite make the cut there that get turned loose.. Its scary to do service work the way I do.. a 9mm the back of a pits head didnt stop it.. inside the ear did though.. I had to get a new tool bag and underwear.. not in that order..
