    Here's the TL;DR version:

For whatever reason, dude goes off the deep end in his back yard and douses himself in gasoline.

Police are called and at some point a taser is deployed and dude proceeds to burst into flames and dies 5 days later from the burns he sustained.

Now. Normally, I am one to usually side with the police in MOST situations involving use of force, HOWEVER, at face value, so many things are wrong here its hard to know where to begin.

The taser is a great addition to a policeman's toolkit to deal with people who may be difficult to control, however, it has made a great many cops LAZY and they refuse to go "HANDS ON" with a person.

This is one of those times when the "HANDS ON" technique would have certainly been more advantageous to all of those involved.

I have to wonder what was going through the officers mind that thought this would have any outcome other than what happened.

    EDITED TO ADD:

Keep in mind that this happened in Great Britian, where MOST police officers are NOT armed with a firearm.

Departments need to issue Batman net guns and Spiderman web shooters. You just never know when you are going to run up against a gasoline doused loon.

Not much to go on in the article, but it seems like the old boy had threatened (to the other occupant in the house), to burn himself up. Looks like the cops just fulfilled his wish. :dunno:

Some studies have suggested that pouring gasoline all over your body likely increases your chances of bursting into flames by as much as 70%.

I need a "poll" from a group of 100 people in one demographic location to even begin to believe in this percentage...:D

Guy covered in gasoline was tasered, and caught fire. Sounds like simple science to me. those that know me are probably expecting me to slam the officer and claim that it was excessive misuse of force combined with blatant stupidity...

Sorry to disappoint, I'm with LEO on this one.

He was nuts enough to set himself on fire.
He was nuts enough to warrant being tased.
He was nuts enough to go hands on with officer, subjecting officer to gasoline by contact (even if he wasn't holding a bottle of flammable liquid) ...thus rendering the taser otherwise useless.

There are enough stupid people on this planet that I'm certain he will not be missed.

I agree leadfoot, unless he has a lighter in his hands. Maybe a few bean bag rounds to get him to comply.

I would venture to say that the odds increase by at LEAST 200%.

Firehose or even water hose his ass. If he sets himself on fire, you've got one hell of a mess to deal with just as if you tasered him.

I'm thinking they had to drive stun this guy, because if they had hit him with darts, no spark would have occurred. If you're close enough to drive stun, obviously you could tell he's covered with gas...

Whatever happened to the baton? If you're justified using a tazer you're certainly justified using another control device.
I'm not back benching the bobbies or anything, maybe they didn't smell the gas or connect the dots, but I read about a lot of instances where a tazer is used when it would be just as effective to use a baton. Seems like its becoming a crutch.

The baton can't be nearly as fun! Cops need amusement too!

Look at youtube videos of tasings; madcap hilarity!

The rules differ from agency to agency. Most agencies have the taser ahead of the baton. The reason being that there is a greater chance of injury with the baton than the taser(unless covered in flammable liquid).

I don't have any experience with other agencies policies. The only experience I have is with my own, and we don't even carry them. I think we're one of the few that still use a PR-24 as a baton. That thing's got some bad ju ju lol.

Apparently, this is an exclusive fraternity that only a "lucky few" have gained membership to.

In short, save the gasoline for the car or lawnmower. :)
