If you had to buy a used 4WD SUV, what would you get?

Asking on behalf of my lil bro. He has a 2WD VW Touareg, I want to say a 2012? Anyway, he lives in Virginia now for college and is considering selling it and buying something used that can handle the weather and also be "cool".

My first suggestion was a Tahoe but I don't think he wants something that big and drinks gas. And he doesn't want a pickup either.

Any rec's from you fine gentlemen?

I had an xterra. Reliable, decent power, decent mileage, lots of utility. They put lots of thought into things like the plastic back area. Easy to clean up. The on the fly transfer case and no need to lock hubs was nice.

I don't know about the cool factor but any 4wd will handle most weather conditions in the mid-atlantic. If he does not have much experience in snow, you can pass on the most important thing to remember is that 4wd will help get you going in the snow but it has the exact same stopping ability as any car with four wheels and brakes. Don't let him end up in the ditch thinking he can go fast with a 4wd.

Sorry, there's nothing cooler than chugging down the road in a CJ7, top down with trail trophies all over it, sporting a 5 o'clock shadow with your shades on without a care in the world except to decide which trail to conquer next. That and the fact that most girls won't turn down a ride in it either. Just sayin.......
