When I get the money together I think I want to get my first Glock. I'm thinking about a 19 and it would be for CC.
Question is what do you think and where can I get the best price when the time comes?

I have a buddy that has a 686 4" that he wants to sell to get some money for a Glock 20. He keeps asking me how much the 686 is worth and I have no clue.

Good choice with the 19; small enough and big enough for everything. And carry g17 spare mags. I'd give interstate guns a try.

Interstate Guns in Hammond is good to go.

Gen 3's are cheaper than Gen 4's, but lack the ability to change backstraps.

Interstate is a great place. Not sure where you are at, but if close to Lafayette I would go to Barney's. The 19 is a great size. As they say, big enough to fight with, small enough to hide. If you get a deal on a Gen 3 go for it. A lot of people prefer them over the 4's.

    ________
Do the prices really vary that much on Glocks?

Glocks are pretty much the same wherever you go: $500-550ish for Gen 3 / $550-600ish for Gen 4

Granted, you get three magazines with the Gen 4, instead of two magazines with the Gen 3, and you get the ability to change backstraps.

The Lipsey's, Vickers, and other exclusives will cost more, obviously.

The extra mag is worth about 25 bucks so that makes up some of the difference between the gen 3 and 4. but to piggy back on what DAVE_M posted, the back straps may or may not be useful depending on the grip you want. Also I personally feel the trigger feels worse on the Gen 4's over the gen 3's. And I have multiple examples of each.

If you like slimmer, then gen 4's without any backstrap is smaller in your hand than a gen 3.

Pretty sure that was the case. Pretty sure all my gen4 glocks were $569.00.

Make sure your gen4 glocks have the "dot" connector.

According to prices I have received from Sponsors on BS it would be Pelican Pawn in Denham Springs.
The new 686 models cost slightly more than a new G20 so unless it is a clean older pre lock model he may not get enough for a new G20.

Larger magazine release on the Gen 4 makes it worth getting the Gen 4.

    Plus I like the texture.

    Throw the backstraps away.

I started switching over to all Gen 4 Glocks as they became available starting 6 years ago. My only Gen 3 is a NIB 20th anniversary edition G17.
Only 2,006 made in 2006 and signed by Gaston Glock.
