I want to take a 16" mid length upper shave the front sight gas block and install a Free Float Handguard that will extend past the shaved gas block.

What length handguards should I be looking for?

    12" or greater.

You could get away with a 10" hand guard, but I find most hand guards come in 9", 12" or 13", and 15" lengths.

Not knowing anything about handguards. Who makes the absolute best/strongest handguards? "want to avoid them ever moving and being held on by tons of little screws".

15" is useless, IMO. I dislike putting my hand that close to the muzzle and I don't care for the added weight.

Some folks would argue that 15" is better, because you can push a light out further and have a longer sight radius. While those are both true, there are extended light mounts readily available and most modern rifles have optics, so sight radius length becomes a moot point.

Personally, all my rifles have 13" hand guards.

Buy quality and you will never have to worry about it moving.

The Geissele Mk8 rails use a proprietary barrel nut with dual cross bolts as well as dual set screws to keep the hand guard from twisting.

I've also had good luck with ALG Defense EMR hand guards (manufactured by Geissele).

It truly depends on how much money you wish to spend.

Why did that guy cut off the delta ring?? I have had several troy rails and never once has the thought of cutting it off come to mind. It would have taken him less time to remove it properly and put the barrel nut back on. What an idiot.

Budget for the handguard is $500.00.

I'm sure I want a handguard that uses a proprietary barrel nut.

I'm gonna run a front sight, light and sling mount on the handguard so I'm thinking key mold or m-lok would better than going full blown quad rail "weight wise".

Why in the world would u try to shave off the front valve? You can get a small gas valve for $15 or so and replace the front site post. Your rail will slide right over the valve.QUOTE=bigtattoo79;1538519]I want to take a 16" mid length upper shave the front sight gas block and install a Free Float Handguard that will extend past the shaved gas block.

Choose your team first. Keymod or Mlok.

If you decide on Keymod then I would get a BCM KMR.
If you decide on Mlok then I would go Geissele Mk8.

He cut it off to show everyone that you don't need proper tools (Barrel Nut Wrench, Punches, and Vise Block) to remove the FSB & Delta Ring. In the process, he also showed everyone how to destroy a FSB & Delta Ring, as well as throw metal shavings all over your rifle :ugh:

Since you want to shave weight, I'd highly recommend looking into ALG Defense hand guards. They are made by Geissele and are minimalist style hand guards. They make them in MLOK and Keymod, as well are the original diamond shaped pattern. For $500, you could buy the handguard (with included barrel nut), the front sight, a light mount, and the light. Don't worry about a sling mount, because it's already machined for QD sling mounts.

Why in the world would u try to shave off the front valve? You can get a small gas valve for $15 or so and replace the front site post. Your rail will slide right over the valve.

It's a gas block, not a valve. It doesn't open and close. (unless you spend the money for an adjustable block)

He cut the FSB, because he was demonstrating a very redneck way of installing a Troy hand guard without the proper tools.

If you decide on Mlok then I would go Geissele Mk8.

    +1

Or go with an ALG Defense EMR V2 MLOK to save more weight over the Geissele Mk8.

Get a 15" rail, having the ability to rest the hg anywhere on a prop, rock, truck bed what ever without touching the barrel is nice, plus the most important is it just looks bad ass! :-)

If weight is the issue just do away with the handguard and get yourself an oven mit.

I'd say a large portion of shooters still shoot like this...

So I'd agree and say get rid of hand guards completely.

I'm shaving the FSB because I want a pinned gas block "no set screws".

My understanding is the quad rail handguards weigh more. I'm not looking to make it ultra light I just don't see a need to add weight where it's not needed.
