Hey guys, I am looking for somebody who can teach me about hunting hogs on WMAs.

Places to go, how to track and find the hogs, field dress them, all I need to know.

If anybody on here who does this type of hunting would let me tag along, I would really appreciate it.

I wouldn't mind paying for a guide either, if I could find one.

The December issue of Louisiana Sportsman had an article in it about stalking hogs at Pearl River WMA. That is the type of hunting I want to learn about.

    Thanks, barbarossa

Hey dude! How are things going at the shop?

After February, we are going to do some Hog Hunting in Mississippi. You are welcome to come. We'll have to check the details, but I think any hunting license will get you in the door for Hogs which will make it alot cheaper than hunting deer. I can't hunt anymore till then. :(

If anyone who hunts in LA can/would help Barbarossa out, he's a good guy with some cool guns.

Man Ive never actually stalked hogs but hunt them alot. If I was going to start I would get a good gps, get with wind in my face, and walk. Only bad thing is I wouldnt be stalking anything during deer season and after that you or gonna be very limited on weapons to use.

I've stalked them many times in PR WMA. Where I hunt it's 100% luck to find them. It usually involves going on your hands and knees through unreal briar patches and praying they decide not to hunt you.

This is my first season back out there since Katrina. The woods are completely diferent than what I was familiar with. I'm trying to re-learn them without much luck so far. I'm also waiting until muzzleloader season ends before I really start commando crawling out there.

You're welcome to join me but I guarantee nothing. You'll need a 22mag or a 12g with 3" or 3.5" turkey mags and a full or x-full choke.

Now gun season on deer is closed here, this thread is about night hunting and I am day hunting, are we saying the same gun restrictions apply in daylight as at night ??

If so, I have been in violation a long time , never looked or heard, just always hunted with rifle.....but of course will rectify immediately if necessary

    :(

I'm not positive on the laws in LA, but I'm thinking you can hunt with whatever in the daylight hours provided you are following the "in season" rules..... ie don't carry a bolt gun during primitive weapon season etc...

Again.... I don't really know and if someone knows better, I'd like to know as well.

On WMA you have to hunt daytime and with only the caliber that is legal for the season that is in progress. After rifle season for deer is closed the only caliber you could use is whats legal for tree rats and rabbits. Only ones that might be effective is a 22 mag or maybe a .17hmr. I wouldnt shoot a hog with light shot from a shotgun.

When no season is going on you cant hunt. You can get a permit to carry a gun while hunting hogs with dogs it opens on most feb. 2nd I think. I dont know if you can get a permit and just not bring dogs??

Not on WMA here, all on private land, we never even thought about guns, we have always used rifles on hogs, not .22 's though....270, 30-30...like that

Didn't think about it till I read about these night time regs where the state is apparently demanding human sacrafice...bird shot or 22 for a pissed off hog...the author doesn't hunt

On private land you can hunt hog year round during daylight hours as long as you hold a valid hunting license. On PR WMA you can hunt hog during any open season (except spring turkey and squirrel) as long as you have the proper license and weapon for the season. Fall squirrel ends Feb 28th in PR WMA, until then rimfires and bird shot is legal during daylight hours.

It IS illegal to hunt hogs on NWR's unless it's deer season and you hold the proper license and deer weapon. I'm not clear but I believe you can take hog on a NWR during other seasons if you run across one. If that's the case you may kill a hog during squirrel season as long as you're not "hunting" hogs. I believe the term wildlife enforcement uses is "sudden kill" to describe the loophole. Again, I'm not clear on that so I don't take hog while on NWR's.

On another note ccw holders can bring there carry weapon but cant "hunt" with it. So if you get attacked by the hog maybe it would fall under self-defense. LOL

Any rifle any day during daytime for hogs on private land.

+1. However, purely out of C.Y.A., if I were carrying a centerfire weapon, buckshot or slugs I'd make sure I had a big game license. Not sure if that's necessary, but it's good to cover all bases.
