Does anyone know how far you have to be away from your neighbors residence to fire a pistol without getting the law after you?

This is in a RURAL, i.e. no town around area.

Apparently one of the neighbors, not even near called LPSO?

A friend of mine told me a Livingston Parish Officer just visited him and told him he had to be 500 feet from his own house and I find that hard to believe you have to be aware of shooting on your own property!!!!

Any LP officers input would be greatly appreciated!

Depending on parish ordinance I suspect. Otherwise that officer may be assuming a law that is not entirely correct. Or it might be on the nose.

:p Lot of help I am huh.

    There's an old saying:

If someone calls about it, its a disturbance and someone is getting sent out.

    LA Revised Statue 33:120:

The governing authorities of the parishes of this State are authorized to zone in order to prohibit, restrict, or regulate hunting and the shooting of firearms in the heavily populated areas, as determined by said governing authorities, within their parishes, and to set penalties for violation thereof.

I do not have a book of Livingston Parish ordinances to cite WHAT the particulars are for the parish.

But I know from personal experience, that if someone makes a complaint to the LPSO, a deputy will be sent out to investigate.

I found the Livingston Parish ordinance that covers it:

Sec. 11-3. - Hunting, discharge of firearms on roads or highways.

    (a)

Hunting or the discharge of firearms on roads or highways is hereby prohibited, except by law enforcement officers in performance of their official duties.

    (b)

The illegal use of weapons or dangerous instrumentalities is the intentional, criminally negligent, discharging of any firearm, or the throwing, placing or other use of any article, liquid, or substance, where it is foreseeable that it may result in death or great bodily harm to humans.

    (c)

If the use or discharge of the weapons is within one hundred (100) feet of any parish road, state or public road, or within five hundred (500) feet of any residence, it is presumptive evidence of foreseeable death or that great bodily harm exists.

I would ASSUME that this does NOT mean your OWN residence, but any neighboring houses in the area. However, if YOUR residence is within 100 feet of a roadway, this would apply.
    (d)

Whoever shall violate this section shall be fined no more than five hundred dollars ($500.00), or imprisoned for not more than thirty (30) days, or both.

Thankfully I live in east BR and just blend into the natural surroundings of other gunshots

In EBR Parish it is something like 1 mile and if they get a compliant they will visit you.

Livingston Parish is 500' from a residence and the same visit applies if someone complains.

Where I'm at in the woods of Vernon Parish, there is no noise ordnance. We called about people with loud 4 wheelers running during the late hours, but we were told that there is no noise ordnance, nothing could be done. I asked about gun shots, he said as long as I wasn't shooting towards anyone else's home I was good.

I know in Terrebonne Parish it is 500 feet from a house or 100 feet from a road when not around houses. I got caught shooting in my back yard and got charged with illegal discharge of a firearm.

This is why I'm happy as a clam we have 60 acres and 40 of it is thick woods and pasture. If we get a complaint, the LEO is going to have to hike through horse poo to get to us. Otherwise if it's much more than a handgun, we're in the bottom hidden from view of the houses.
