I've come to the conclusion after a few recent excursions to the "hood" that I am cool with people sagging their pants. I may even appreciate when the homeboys show off their boxers (no homo). Because I realized that they are advertising that they are not armed or that they can't get to their piece very quickly. Just reassures me that I probably have a leg up on most of the homies showing their azz to the world.

This cultural phenomenon was started in the prison system and has its roots in prison culture.

Prisoners are given generic sizes of pants to wear -san belts, so they don't decide to off themselves - with those sizes too big for the wearer drooping past the waist.

Hip-Hop culture adopted this styling and it was soon a trend among youth across the country

and it made it easy to do a little game of hide the boudin while standing in line for chow

I really want to start carrying some of those little black jack fire crackers around with me. The little red ones that sound like a .22 going off. Then set em off behind people with their pants super low and see if they can run or if they trip. Call it Hood survival practice.

I have some theories on why some aspects of Black culture are they way they are.

    Rims/chrome on cars/etc.---My Theory:

Blacks could not always afford cars, in fact, it is a somewhat "recent" thing, historically. The same can be said for shoes, as well, although that came about a bit before cars. They are just acting like "young money" in that they want to show the world as well as solidify their personal place as one in which THEY CAN afford a car/shoes, so they buy the most gaudy example/modify in a gaudy way, so that others are sure to see and take notice of their affluence/rise in society.

I have noticed that a lot of middle-class blacks will purchase pre-owned cars that were usually associated with rich older whites, such as jaguar, AMG Mercedes, etc. as well.

I think it is a knee-jerk reaction to their social position being elevated in the latter half of the 20th century.

The sagging? "Looks tough"=associated with prison/hiphop/whatever.

Anyway, just my take on it, after thinking about it for a while.

I've had the same conversation and completely agree. I'm a big fan of saggy pants. Not only do you know they aren't packing, if you had to get physical their ass would be on the ground reeeeal quick like. Especially when they combine the saggy pants with the laceless shoes.

I have been noticing more and more of that. I heard it called "geek-chic" straight leg skinny jeans, button up short sleeve shirts, fake glasses. More crap to show off, but significantly more socially acceptable.
