Most of the black ones out there are dyed. It is really not that hard. We have done several of the conversions and the key is to use the liquid Rit dyes not the powder and use as hot a water as you can stand.
They take Thompson stick mags. I have shot a few of them. They are no where near as heavy as a true Tommy but the same horrible ergonomics. The lowers are plastic on some of them. They are very picky on ammo. Had to repair a friends, simple guts. $300 max.
For dollar spent out of the box, the Savage would be your best bet. The 700 is the AR15 of bolt guns with the most aftermarket following. Most rifles will outshoot the operator (mine included). I run a FN SPR 20".
