Found a small .22rf single-shot rifle at an auction in another state: a Tobin. I collect old s-s 22s so bid and won it. I'm trying to find more info on it, but I need your help.
The only identifying marks on it are on top of the barrel and are pictured below. Briefly, here's what I've learned so far: a Canadian gent named Tobin got investors together in Connecticut and in 1909 began making high quality Tobin shotguns. About 1916 they sold out to Canadian investors who moved the operation to Woodstock, Ontario.
They continued in operation there until 1921 when it was taken over by GB Crandall who continued it until 1930. Sometime during Crandall's ownership they also made these cheapie rifles which were given as premiums for selling five subscriptions to the Canadian magazine, Rod And Gun.
I've found several references to Tobins, and Tobin catalogs, even one Tobin shotgun for sale recently, BUT, no reference to the Tobin rifle!!! I spoke to a Canadian collector who had owned four of them over several decades and was selling his last one at auction that very weekend.
I checked back with the auction house after the sale. The little guy sold for $750. It was in excellent condition, was purchased many years ago from Flayderman here in the US, and still had the tag on it from the Winchester Museum.
Do any of you folks know of one of these little rifles? Or, know of an old ad for them? Anything in reference to them.
Would appreciate any help and info you may have.
Thanks in advance. Best regards ~ ~ ~ FloridaFialaFan
