Due to my crazy schedule with a full-time contractual commitment and a part-time business, I decided to give working out first thing in the morning a try. I figured it would be out of the way, and I wouldn't have to worry about that 6:00 PM phone call requiring me to work the rest of the evening, thereby ruining my exercise routine yet again.

There seem to be lots of pros and relatively little cons to working out first thing in the morning from the research I performed. Also, the jury seems to be out on whether to eat before or after the workout. Thus far I wait until after, but this is only my first week of working out first thing in the morning. I'm just not hungry at 4:30 to 5:00 AM, so I wake up, get ready, drink a big glass of water, then head to the gym. If I were to do a pre-workout "meal" would something like a Whey Protein shake be the best way to go?

I wouldn't eat much before just because I'd be burping up chunks of food. When I don't make eggs and grits or something, my breakfast is usually vanilla protein with some strawberries and bananas in the blender. I'd say a protein shake would be the way to go.

I get off too late to work out and make it home at a decent time. I'm thinking of getting up at 0300 myself and heading to the gym, but I know how bad I am getting up at 0400-0430 already. An empty gym does sound like a great start to the day though.

I find that when I work out in the mornings I get so much more work done before 10AM. The brain is already in full gear when I get to the office.

There's plenty of proof that eating something small pre-workout is beneficial. But like you said eating early is hard for most people.

The number one thing to remember about a.m. workouts
is to stretch. But warm up before stretching with some light quick moving cardio to get the blood flowing before stretching.

AM workouts and eating is an interesting subject. From all of my research and personal training it really depends mainly on how long you will be workout out for and what kind of workout you will be doing. Less than 45 min and I am good to go without food. That's 45 of cardiovascular workouts mixed with maybe light weights or just bodyweight stuff. As for actual weight workouts... I like to eat first otherwise I get a little dizzy. I would say if you're just doing cardio or something light, food probably isn't necessary. If you are doing moderate and heavy weights or anything too intense you need to get some food in you. A small protein shake with a little bit of carbs thrown in should be fine. Honestly a glass of milk and a banana would probably work too.

An apple about 45 min prior to your training isn't a bad thing. Protein also if weight training to have amino acids available to start the rebuilding.

Right, my advice about pre-workout nutrition is in regards to LIFTING
and how pre-workout meals can maximize protein synthesis.
