    Thoughts?

Take, for instance, Jerry DeWitt — a former Pentecostal minister — and his newest endeavor. This weekend, he took his atheism to new levels with the launch of the Community Mission Chapel of Lake Charles Louisiana (an atheist congregation). While the house of worship sounds like a traditional Christian church, it’s quite the opposite.

On Sunday, the “secular” church service unfolded at a hotel in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as Religion News Service reports. DeWitt, who faced challenges after leaving his faith behind, is looking to create a sense of community with the announcement of his chapel and its accompanying services.

    Why the singing :dunno:

"atheism" and "church" sort of don't go together. But hey, more power to them. Revel in the disbelief!

    Hmm. I don't know.

Maybe the (un)Pastor has become a contrary? :dunno:

yea I can completely see why you would want to meet up with like-minded people, but I just don't understand the singing part.

Today's like the day of dupe threads... I guess we're going with this one? ;)

Kinda weird, but eh - trying to foster good community bonds isn't gonna get the stink-eye from me.

Very weird. Sounds like some people lost their faith but still need the comfort of "religion". Seems like the makings of a cult to me. There's nothing to celebrate as an atheist, since it's merely a lack of something. Sorta like dudes who don't play baseball getting together for a baseball game, but there's no baseballs. Just plain weird.

Maybe they call it a church for the tax free benefits.

If they are filing as a 501c3 then there must be income being generated. It could be membership dues, tithing seems odd for an athiest organization. It sounds like the former pastor feels a need for a flock. Hopefully its just the start of a secular civic group and not another Jonestown. Time will tell.

Bingo... If you don't worship Christ, you worship Satan..
    ...wut? That'... no, nevermind.

Anyways, I think Church is great for brotherhood, sense of community, organizing events, helping your neighbors, all that fun stuff. As far as I can tell they're just getting together, bonding, doing all that stuff without a gospel sermon. It looks like an experiment, so I'm sure they'll drop stuff that doesn't "work" or isn't cared for by the attendants, and change as desired. But with this organization, they can get to know their neighbors, benefit eachother, do all the good stuff that make people better, despite the lack of a gospel sermon.

Nah, this isn't exactly the same as devil worship. Hell (no pun intended)- do they even believe in Satan? :dogkeke:

Not sure what the point of forming a "congregation" just to add an exclamation point to the fact that that you are a non-believer, skeptic, doubter, whatever ( I might even go as far as to say I think it's a little lame:D)- but it's a free country.

Nothing they do is going to change the way I think or what I believe. :dunno:
