My unit is unmarked and doesn't look like a police car. I don't pass marked units that are doing the speed limit.

Okay now that I understand. As professional courtesy to fellow officers, I totally understand not passing a marked car in an unmarked car "just cause I can".

You do realize there are discrepancies between speedometers don't you? If your are driving 60 and my speedometer is showing 60 and I'm passing you at a slow steady pace am I breaking the law? Are you going to pull me over because I am passing you? I'm trying to get where you are coming from? Surely you had to have experienced just such a situation in the past? How did you handle it? Were you butt hurt by it?

Most police cars have certified speedometers and some officers check them against radar to verify they are correct.

Yeah, I realize that. Did you know that sometimes speedometers show a slower speed than the actual speed?

I'm not going to pull anyone over for passing me. My unit is unmarked and doesn't look like a police car. I'm not giving up the element of surprise. I don't pass marked units that are doing the speed limit.

When I had a marked unit (which was over 5 years ago), I don't ever remember being crept by while doing the speed limit. People either didn't pass me or they blazed past me. If they blazed past me, they were stopped and cited because of the violation. There was no butt hurt involved. They earned their citation.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't police officers in marked cars instructed to do a small bit over the limit so as not to congest traffic? If thats true I'd argue that if posted limit is 60, and hes doing 64 you're downright begging for a ticket if you pass him- quickly or not.

If thats not true, then it's just something I presumed and thought would make sense.

Semantics. We never said it was a brilliant idea. We said it isn't "disrespectful". Breaking the law is always a stupid decision. But breaking the law is in absolutely no way disrespectful to a police officer.

    A) Setting your house on fire is against the law. It isn't disrespectful to a fireman, even if he is standing across the street watching.
    B) Cutting your own wrists is against the law. It isn't disrespectful to a paramedic, even if he is watching you do it.
    C) Passing a patrol car in the flow of traffic in excess of the speed limit is against the law. It isn't disrespectful to the police officer, even if he watches you do it.

Where I live it is not against the law to burn things including your house. The law thing comes in to play when you make a false claim on insurance.

We are instructed to do the speed limit. I know this will come as a shock, but some people call and complain when officers do over the speed limit and often exaggerate the speed. Most officers would love to do 10 over and help with the flow but its not worth the complaints.

Yeah, that certainly depends on location. Set a house ablaze in a crowded neighborhood and you're endangering more than if you're burning your barn out in nowhereville.

    That I did not know.

edit: Not that people call and complain, but that it actually happens frequently enough to passively restrict officers driving habits.

I just don't see it. When I pass an officer, I'm not passing him to be disrespectful, I'm passing him because I've made the decision to do so and acknowledge the possibility that he may pull me over. If he makes that decision I'm okay with it, I know what I did, his like he knows what I'm doing. There is no emotion involved in my choice and their shouldn't be in his. I drive about 80,000 miles a year, I pass officers frequently, though never at an excessive speed(+5 or less). I've never been pulled over for passing an officer. I don't think most officers take themselves that seriously or are a part of the us vs them mindset that has become so common here. I could just be an extreme statistical outlier, but I don't believe I am.

And unfortunately, those people are using the same emotional thinking that you're saying officers are. They are just doing it from the other side. I'm sure they feel it is disrespectful for people, who are supposed to be setting an example, to be flaunting that they don't need to follow the same traffic laws as the rest of us. They're taking themselves too seriously. I don't care if I see an officer driving 5 or 10 over and its been my experience they don't care if I do the same.

People need to quit being concerned with imaginary signs of disrespect and stop taking themselves so seriously.

I thought you were a LEO. I need to hang out here more. I appreciate the fact that you do not think its disrespectful. I could care less if you pass officers but just provided advice, you don't have to follow it.

And I can appreciate that. Like I said before, it is a choice I make and I'm willing to accept the results of my actions. Getting upset that you got a speeding ticket for speeding in front of an officer is crazy. Plenty of crazies out there though.

Anyone who gets an emotional response from minor traffic violations. It's traffic laws, no need to be upset about it.

Because it is. Passing a marked car going the speed limit is flagrantly violating the law. Completely disrespectful, however, it's ok to be anti-LE these days.

It has nothing to do with anti-LE. I've passed marked cars going the speed limit more times than I care to count. I've never had any of them look twice, other than a few nods and waves.

It just takes one time with the wrong cop.

Whether you're anti-LE or not isn't the point. People in general are now more anti-LE than they were say, 15 years ago.

I respectfully disagree if the traffic ticket involves catalytic converters, O2 sensors, or any other device that the government wants me to believe I am required to have for the greater good!

Tracking devices and/or black boxes; are there on some cars now, but they are coming to a theater near EVERYONE soon; and you WILL be required to have one! Anyone want to bet?

Solution: continue restoring and driving old cars.

Take one for a spin and if you've got spare time, tell one of those superiority complex officers with the tactical t-shirt on too tight that you aren't wearing a seat belt and you aren't required to by law. It's a hilarious reaction every single time. (unless he's a car guy, at which point allocate more spare time for fun conversation)

I don't think those are traffic violations, I was under the impression they were part of something else. Either way, I revise my statement to say moving violations.
