Interesting. Mostly what I was figuring: Need, location, habit, preparedness and "just because." Plus others I never considered so this was a learning experience.

    Thanks to all who responded.

I used to schedule all of my criminal encounters. I subscribed to a service which would take care of the details for you. You called them up at least 12 hours before hand and placed your order for a robbery, assault, rape, whatever you wanted to experiance. You told them the time and place you would want the incident to occur and the service would have a criminal there to commit the crime. This was a very convenient service and I made sure that I was always armed for my prearranged criminal encounters.
Sadly, times change and I had to tighten the belt on some things like the guy who mowed my lawn and the Criminal Schedule Service. I really miss not knowing the exact time and location of criminal encounters. Now things are totally random. It's like when I gave up scheduling my car accidents. When I stopped doing that I realized that I should start wearing my seatbelt everywhere I go in my car just in case. So it has become with my gun. Instead of just taking it out of the closet, dusting it off and putting it on for the occasional, scheduled criminal encounter, now I keep it with me all of the time. If I knew when and where I would need my gun I would probably just leave it in the closet until that time.

Hats off to you Yale. That's funny. Wish I had written that.

Some people carry 24/7 because of the number of times a story starts like this:
I live alone in a nice area (Destrehan). I really have no fear, or at least no unreasonable fear, at home. Crime is low to non-existent around here and the cops do a fine job of having a constant presence. I see patrol cars up and down the streets constantly.
    ...and ends in tragedy.

...because of the times we hear...
My sweet puppy never mauled anyone BEFORE...
He was such a nice boy. He would help the old lady take out her garbage. I never thought he was capable of THIS...
This is the FIRST time this has happened in this area...

If you only knew what was happening in the hearts and minds of some of the people around you...

The "poison" may be more concentrated across town but, when it comes time for it to effect you, it is just as deadly.

That "Safety tool" aka gun is like the fire extinguisher you keep in your kitchen. I get asked by my family members why I feel like I have to carry all the time... do I feel like someone is coming out to get me or cause harm? And I ask them:

Do you have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen? ... well yea
Well, are you planning on burning your house down?.. no
Whats the point of having the fire extinguisher?... just in case

My point is that we never plan on bad things to happen..but we can be ready when they do.

First, I am not questioning anyone's reasons to do so. And I am not trying to call BS on anyone. That established, I am curious about reasons many seem to be constantly carrying around the house.

I live alone in a nice area (Destrehan). I really have no fear, or at least no unreasonable fear, at home. Crime is low to non-existent around here and the cops do a fine job of having a constant presence. I see patrol cars up and down the streets constantly.

I DO, however, keep a loaded "The Judge" on a nightstand. No prying little hands to worry about, ya know? But I read stories of many who carry at home all the time. Go outside or hanging around the house -- packing! Why?

Do you live in a neighborhood or area where there is a lot of crime or a higher potential for crime? Is it just a habit? Do you really need to carry to the mailbox, etc.? I'm really curious as to why some folks feel compelled to be armed to get the mail or work in the garden. I'm sure anyone living in New Orleans or other close by areas has more than a few reasons due to the, uh, inhabitants and their propensity towards criminal activity. But in less criminally-infested areas why the 24/7 carry?

I hope this isn't upsetting or annoying to anyone. I just truly am curious as to why access to a firearm is felt to be required for a lot of people. Any light /reasons you can shed on this much appreciated! Thanks.

I guess I just have a hard time understanding how in today's time, people still do not see the error in this logic. Crime is not dictated by the place. There is no "safe place" that is immune from crime. Churches, schools, groceries stores, safe neighborhoods...etc. are all safe until they are not.

    I have a perfect reason,Just happened 10 minutes ago.

I was out walking our 2 small dogs(inside small 3 pd dogs) and all of a sudden
my little brown girl sees a big dog in the yard.Well being a small dog of course,
takes after him.And sure enough ,in the middle of my front yard, the big dog trys
    eat my dog.

Well as most days I had my glock on my side.I live on 40 acres or so.SO snakes are
not uncommon.Well anyway.I yell at the big dog and my dog trying to see if that will
break them away from each other. It didn't work and the big dog was about to literally
bite down on my dog causing serious injury I'm sure.I worked at a vets office for 2
years and I have seen a few attacks and knew what out come this would have.Doctor
bills and maybe death of my dog. Also the dogs were about 30 yards from me,so trying
to get to them was an issue.

So I pulled the glock,Put the laser on and dead aimed at the dogs Heart.Would have
been head normally but my dog was too close for that.Anyway.One shot, dead dog.

Pretty well end of story.Neighbor came over ,retrieved dog.I apologized for having to do
what I did and I was sorry.I love animals of all kinds. He muttered FU and proceeded to load
his dog in his truck. We live outside city limits ,so wasn't any breaking of laws, just a save
my dog from death in her own yard kind of situation....

I was reading through this thread and feeling more and more sarcastic until I read your post. I want to thank you for saying what I was thinking. You nailed it.

Where I live we prepare for meteor strikes, because they're more likely to occur than some miscreant coming into the neighborhood and attempting to burglarize a house or commit a violent crime. The cops would swarm them before they got one block into the neighborhood. The cops are really that close all the time, and the neighbors always call when we see people who don't live here. The police ALWAYS respond in numbers. I live in a good neighborhood. I recently got a police report of the calls to which they responded (including all crimes) with a half mile of my house. The worst thing that happened was a couple car break-ins at night. Cars were on the street most likely. On the other hand the police responded to a whole butt-load of suspicious persons calls and burglar alarms.

It's damned inconvenient to carry a gun around all the time. They bump into things and scratch your expensive furniture, plus they're a real pain every time you "visit the facility" or work outdoors and get sweaty. They ruin any nice belts from their weight. Unless I'm working on the car, doing carpentry, or some such I don't wear t-shirts and crappy clothes anymore. Guns and nice clothes are difficult to reconcile. If there was a reason to carry one I would, but where I live it's just not necessary.

Nice neighborhoods are indeed where the money is, but it's also where the police are. Last week some of the neighbors floated the idea of creating a tax district for our neighborhood in order to raise $240 per house per year to pay for patrols of the neighborhood. Not a bad idea if you ask me.

I have lived in several extremely dangerous neighborhoods during my long life.

I have a Wife, 4 adult kids, and 10 grandkids; only one of whom has a reasonable fear of violent crime.

I have spent much of my life in large city University Hospitals, taking care of perps and their very innnocent victims; the ones who survived.

Every police officer friend and relative I have ever known well has TOLD ME TO !

I read crime news from N.O.CrimeLine, the NRA, & local news sources regularly. I pay special attention to home-invasion reports.

Being armed does not mean that one will always use, or even show, the weapon. It just means that you, the "victim", have that option.

If I don't carry at home my wife does and vise versa. Niether of us leave home without it. My wife was a life long anti gun person because her brother was killed and son shot and almost killed. Then one day out of the blue she informed me she was concerned about the home invasion epidemic in New Orleans and thought it may be time to keep a gun available. A few weeks later she decided it was time to get a concealed permit. As a life long gunner I was pleasently surprised. The truth is a large amount of violent crime happens in the home. The news is full of innocent people being killed by intruders because they are not prepared. Hopefully we will never have to use a weapon to defend ourselves but we will never be in a position that puts us at the mercy of some lunatic who chooses our home to fulfill his foolish desires. We would carry even if the police station was next door. And once you get use to having a gun on your side it really is not a burden and with the proper holster is not in any way uncomfortable.
